CrossOver Games, anyone heard of it?

Postby Woland » 26 May 2008, 03:45

I just recently learned of a program called CrossOver Games that uses Wine to allow for playing PC games on Mac and Linux without a copy of Windows. It's only forty bucks (that's "dollars" to the rest of the world), but it only plays a limited number of games. However, that list includes [edit: some random crap] from Steam and a lot of other stuff.

Does anyone out there use this software? I looked for it in the forums and couldn't find anything. I'm trying to decide whether this is worth my ten gallons of gasoline or not.

If you're using Linux, WINE does this for free.

If you're using a Mac (as am I), what kind is it/when did you buy it? Running the game in Boot Camp and rebooting will let you run it much much faster, in any case.

In summation: If you can get a (completely legal nudge nudge wink wink) copy of Windows (preferably XP), then Boot Camp it up. Otherwise this isn't that bad from what I've heard, but not great for DX10 games

Or if you have the completely legal version of Windows dual boot it. (Linux had the equivalent of boot camp long before Mac did)

Do not pay money for some tarted up version of Wine. Just use Wine.

I've heard of it, but I can't see much use for it aside from a "Oh Emm Gee, that's kinda nifty" situation. As others have stated, boot camp or use a PC.
