Some Questions About Dota

Postby sevey » 14 Jun 2008, 19:55

Alright, I need the help of some of the pros out there. Even just posting links to help would be cool.
First, what do I need to play? Just Warcraft 3? Any of the Expansions?
Next, Does the Warcraft 3 have to be a real copy or can I use a torrent?
And last will I be into Dota? I played and enjoyed tons of starcraft and Diablo 2, also played little bits and enjoyed straight Warcraft 3
Thanks in advance guys.

You'll need Warcraft 3 and the Frozen throne(the expansion), and you should have your own CD-key(otherwise Battlenet will fuck you).

As for 'Will you like it', dunno. Watch some videos, but if you're into playing a single hero(a la D2) and duking it out with a bunch of other heroes, it might be right up your alley. It's good, for sure, but hard to say if you'll like it right away.

Ok, I did really like Diablo 2 and the single hero setup, but I also enjoyed the RTS elements of Warcraft 3. So then I just buy a Warcraft3 Battle Chest to get the game and the expansions and DL the latest client?

Yes. Also get the latest dota map off of www.dota-allstars.com/
People hate it when they have to wait for you to download the map

I think I've totally got it now. So when I get everything installed and up, I just get on Warcraft 3, goto battlenet and look for servers playing the Dota map?

Yessir, that's pretty much it. You should also add Adam, JesterJ, Lavos, Morgan and Bill to your friend's list(I think their info is in the thread at the top that says "DOTA"), since they play semi-regularly.

Yup, go ahead and whisper one of us (our info is in the stickied DotA thread) and we'll help you out, always good to have someone new join us.
Like Allen! said, definitely download the map, people don't let DLers stay. It's quicker to just dl it off of get-dota anyways.

Watch some videos, read some strategies, and practice. You won't have a hang of what's going on for a game or two, and then you'll get the shit beat out of you for another 10. Then you might do well. You'll see, it's fun.

Finally a use for my warcraft III cd's! I had heard about dota.. and if its good enough for a guy to sing a song about it then I think I can digg it. Tho.. I still have FFVII and BGII TOB to finish >.<; Oh well, I guess a third isn't so bad.. I need some online play anyways, and I suck too much at GunboundClassic to really call that playing online.
