Another Desert Bus-like Fundraiser!

Postby wilson_x1999 » 10 Jul 2008, 13:06

http://www.megamanathon.com/

This time, they're playing MegaMan games.

I wonder how many more fundraisers like this will appear before the start of Child's Play o.o

*edit: stupid me, forgot the link >.<*

We were inspired by past efforts, one of which was able to raise over 11,000 dollars.

That's a lot of money!

These past marathons include Cameron Banga and his friends, who went off to finish 4 3-D zelda games within 48 hours, as well as Brian Brinegar, who, with his old college roomates managed to pull off a marathon of the 7 primary Mario games, in one weekend.

The Zelda Marathon can be found here and the Mario Marathon can be found here.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to E-Mail us.

Both this one and the mario one didn't mention us at all. Kinda annoying if you ask me.

Meh guess they don't recognize real challenges like keeping a bus on a straight line for 4+ days.

You should email them and tell them you raised double the $11,000 they're citing. That oughta own them right up in the face y'all.

But srsly, this is kind of like the video game world in general. Someone does something interesting, and a flood of copycats come out trying to capitalize, and then the original comes back with someone new and even better. Like Desert Bus 2! Yay!

it's interesting that people keep calling these "desert bus style fund raisers" and not game-a-thons
I don't think Lrr was the first to do something non stop to make money for charity

Desert Bus did it the best though.

I'm sure they weren't the first, but they did get a lot of publicity from Penny Arcade and the rest of the internet, so I'm pretty sure that these guys got their idea from Desert Bus :S

Also, does anybody know if the guys that did the Mariothon donated the money right away, or are they keeping it until december?

Stupid Kotaku...

but I liked this post:

Wraithfighter wrote:Oh, you know what we should do? A marathon for some really crappy game! One that no one in their right mind would play for five minutes, let alone five days!

Like that game that was supposed to come out a while ago as a gag game, wasn't it called Desert Bus? You know, the one that Penn and Teller put together!

What's more, we should have some people who already do online videos put it together. Like that Canadian comedy group, Loading Ready Run. They're pretty funny, I'm sure they'd like this idea!

I'm gonna go send it to them! It'll be great!

No offense, but all of these seem like people just playing games they've already played before and want to play again, whereas Desert Bus was more of a "Ugh why are we doing this."

Someone needs to write another game that's just as pointless, boring, and tedious as Desert Bus.

Surely it wouldn't be difficult. DB has virtually no content.

Someone should stop complaining and email Kotaku about it so they can get it right.

But not me. I'm too busy.

Some of the guys in the comments mentioned Desert Bus, but who knows if the Kotaku schmucks actually read those.

Well the problem is, they did have articles on Desert Bus, but they seem to have forgotten that it was 1: First, and 2: Raised more money.

Somebody who isn't a lazy wanker (me) email them. GOGO!

The DB article, for those interested. That was after the 12k mark(which is still higher than the Mega Fail Failathon)

These other fundraisers are noble in spirit but weak in execution. I'm not gonna give kids money just because they're playing their favourite game. But goddamn it I shelled out $100 more than I originally planned just so I could push LRR over the 100 hour mark to play Desert Bus. I'm proud of it & proud of LRR for playing all the way through. If they do another big fundraiser I know it's going to be just as rewarding to those of us who donate as it is to whomever the charity benefits.

Huzzah! Long live LRR!

Huh. For some reason I doubt that was actually Graham. Not that I know him, but what I know of him, that seems sort of a weird thing to do. Also, there are no promises that DBFH is back this year.
