And yes, it is an historian! Because the people who made up the word an also didn't say word-initial h's! It's important to remember.

Yeah "h" is a weird thing to start a word with. Over here in sunny (at the moment) UK, we don't pronounce the first "h" for hour, heir or honour, but we do for pretty much everything else (especially herb. To me saying "erb" sounds wrong).

I grew up in California, and I've been saying "erb" my whole life... To me, it's funny to hear Brits say "herb!" I wonder why some dialects say the h and others don't...
