The Thanksgiving after 9/11 my Mother asked me why I wasn't wearing a flag lapel pin. I replied, "I will wear one when I am proud of my country again". I'm still not wearing one.

Trust me, I know.

There was a time I would have considered that a challenge. But I'm older, a tad wiser and I will take your advise.

Do us all a favor, please, and refrain from wearing one even when you think the country has turned around.

They're incredibly tacky, and as with most such symbols, their point is not to express an idea but to manipulate others opinions of the wearer.

The likelihood that I would actually wear one is low. I don't even own one. I may be a patriot but I'm not jingoistic.

Johnny, get your gun, get your gun, get your gun
Take it on the run, on the run, on the run
Hear them calling you and me
Every Son of Liberty
Hurry right away, no delay, go today
Make your Daddy glad to have had such a lad
Tell your sweetheart not to pine,
To be proud her boy's in line

Over there, over there,
Send the word, send the word over there
That the Yanks are coming, the Yanks are coming
The drum's rum-tumming everywhere
So prepare, say a prayer,
Send the word, send the word to beware
We'll be over, we're coming over
And we won't come back till it's over, over there

Johnny, get your gun, get your gun, get your gun
Johnny, show the "Hun" you're a son-of-a-gun
Hoist the flag and let her fly
Yankee Doodle do or die
Pack your little kit, show your grit, do your bit
Yankee to the ranks from the towns and the tanks
Make your Mother proud of you
And the old red-white-and-blue

Over there, over there,
Send the word, send the word over there
That the Yanks are coming, the Yanks are coming
The drum's rum-tumming everywhere
So prepare, say a prayer,
Send the word, send the word to beware
We'll be over, we're coming over
And we won't come back till it's over, over there

I could never get my head around the whole lapel pin thing myself. Up here, pretty much the only time I've seen anybody wear a Canadian lapel pin is on Canada Day, occasionally on Remembrance Day and similar, or when traveling outside the country. Besides that, what's the point, and how did wearing or not wearing when ever come to reflect on the person doing so down in the states?

Two dozen guys evade an entire government system of one of the largest and most powerful countries on the planet and kill thousands of people in a metropolitan area before anyone realises.

That and the war not long afterwards.

(I'm guessing of course, his reasons might be different to my theorised ones above)

So, what you're saying is that he was ashamed of his country because terrorists successfully attacked it, and we would soon be going to war against the country said terrorists were currently in control over.

I'm proud of my country BECAUSE terrorists attacked it. That means we're better than them.

In sideways, I'm pretty sure a flag pin is in violation of the Flag Code anyway. Not that it matters all that much when you see politicians wearing them.

Nope, but pinning an ACTUAL fabric flag to your lapel may be illegal.

Much like me having to put my USA flag in the center of the small flag stand with the French and Aussie flags next to it, as the USA flag must be on the top of the set.

I really should get a Canadian flag too...

I've lost track of how many Americans I've seen deface US flags in an effort of showing how "patriotic" they are. Flying them during storms, from vehicles that gradually fray them into rags, etc. I want a supply of Flag Code pamphlets that I can hand out to them all.

Wilson, I can NOT stop looking at your avatar. Best. Picture . Ever.

Edit: I should point out that as I'm saying this, it's a picture of a manitee on top of (riding? Hugging?) a shark. I'm sure that months from now, this thread will be necro'd, and Wilson will have changed his avatar to something horrible, and people will wonder what the hell I find so appealing about it.

The second world exists. If you follow this logic. Countries like those in the G8 are the 'first' world, countries like Switzerland. Switzerland is a perfect example of a second world as they make sure that third world countries [mostly agrarian] can sell their goods to and communicate with the 'first' world countries. Countries in the second world, also called the semi-periphery, allow money to be transferred easier.

Basically the way it was explained to me in college anthropology is that periphery countries produce the food and raw materials needed by the Periphery. The semi-periphery [ ie Switzerland] helps it get there.

Core -> Semi Periphery -> Periphery.

Though it has been a few years. But yes, according to this theory the 'second' world exists.
