Higher Education

Postby Tetsubo » 02 Aug 2008, 16:18

How many forum members have college degrees?

My last form of formal education was High School. I consider myself self educated however.

My wife has a degree in Journalism.

You coulda just made one thread that asked all the questions you posted. Just saying.

I'm getting a degree in software engineering, but also pursuing one in game design at a later date.
I can't think of a signature.

Well, I didn't necessarily think of all of them at the same time. This one for example popped into my head because my wife is sitting in the kitchen talking to her best friend that has a MFA in Poetry.

Hmm... seems I'm finding more and more competition nowadays.

....So where do you live, and do you have any serious food allergies? :)

I'm in my second semester at UWA (WA in Aus, not Washington) in a 3 year CS degree which I'm dutifully lengthening to 4 years with partial-loading. Here's hoping people will read my resume and have heard of this place... it's the biggest in my region, so I'd sure hope so :?

Well, same as everyone else, I started out wanting to be a doctor. However that has changed (non-perfect grades FTW) somewhat. Now I'm thinking research, particularly into infectious diseases (AIDS, Hepatitus, etc.). I'm hoping to get a research internship at the end of the school year, and... we'll go from there.
My girlfriend has her BSc in Biology (minor in public health), and wants to be an epidemiologist, so our careers kinda mesh which is sweet.
At some point I would like to do aid work overseas.

I want to do that too.

Y'all'll hear about my wonderful games some day, I swear.

Finishing up a BS in Communication Sciences and Disorders, then to 2 years of grad school and one clinical year in Speech Language Pathology, perhaps with a concentration in Dysphagias or Augmentative and Alternative Communications.

Then I get to have 8 letters after my name.

That's cool, though at first glance I thought you had a BA in Scientology. I was a little concerned there.

No, I'm pretty sure he has a PhD in Phychology from the University in his own head. Besides for him, it's prolly a BS in Scientology, with BS meaning something else.

Isn't it technically called a BSc?

Do you prefer digital or film cameras? My wife has done semi-professional photography as part of a former job as a reporter. She has a decent digital SLR system.

I've got a BS in Psychology. I was a few credits away from a Japan studies double major, and I had already arranged to stay at school an extra year and study abroad at Japan... when the evil head of the international department called me and said
"We've already approved you for the extra year, but you can't spend it abroad!"
"But... Japan Studies... is the reason I'm staying an extra year. I'm not going on one of those crazy 'lawl, I'm gonna live in italy and get credit for it' fun in the sun years abroad, I'm already registered to take courses at a university in Tokyo!"
"Well, you can't do it. If you want an extra year you cannot take it abroad."
"Why? I know the cost ratios, I'll be paying you more than I'd pay them directly."
"You just can't."

No amount of negotiating or arguing would help, and I was worried about losing my opportunity altogether. So I called the college I was applying to in Japan, and they said they could change my application from "year of study" to "kenkyusei" which is an extra year of independent study out of graduation. So I said "Fuck You" to my old college, vowed never to give them a goddam cent of my money, graduated normally with just my Psych degree, and headed to Japan for a year.

And the kicker, after all this, what's my current job?

Game development.

Heh. Now granted, I got my foot in the door due to the near-fluency in Japanese... but now I don't ever use it, and I've forgotten most of it. I can still pick it up again whenever I spend six months or so studying, but I don't have the wherewithal to maintain it.
