Just remembered, I can ask "Do you speak German?" in German. Helpful, that.

Gnomish? Dwarven is far more useful.

I speak English English, the royal English, the Queen's english, the language of the empire!
Not like you lousy colonies or minions of the commonwealth...
**ahem**
Sorry...
I've studied French upto GCSE standard, done beginner's German and Spanish and can understand a tiny bit of spoken japanese, i always had trouble with the characters though. I can read a fair amount of it, but understanding the english equivilent of the reading i have trouble with sometimes.
I'm starting British Sign Language in October and will probably continue that until i'm fairly fluent as it could be pretty helpful at some point.
I'm considering starting an arabic or russian course for fun in the winter also.

Languages I have attempted: Indonesian (Was forced) French (Was the other option the second I hit high school...did not like.) and Mandarin, with which I found excruciatingly difficult due to having naught the time nor the effort to learn a second set of characters let alone the languages.
Languages I am fluent in:
The Queens English. I do my best to try and use it accurately and often to compensate for my lack of linguistic skills in other areas.
Languages I want to learn: Japenese. Damn would it be handy to be able to LISTEN to my Anime without having to read. Not to mention of course, that the Japanese are awesome.
I find learning a second language very difficult, I don't know why but the methods I've been taught in the past never seem to stick. I find this piece of self ignorance actually quite frustrating, I would very much like to be fluent in at least two language.
Is anyone able to give me approximate time as to how long it took them to learn their second language? 1 year? 2? 4? 8?

Thing is my friend, is that some people are genuinely intuitive at learning languages and for some it'll require lots of work. I'm the second of these two and without constant immersion in a learning environment i'm unlikely to ever pick up a second language.
So without say, moving to the country and pretty much having to learn out of necessity, you might not be able to pick up a language.
