For someone who hates their picture being taken, I find photographs without a flash make me look better.
And thinking of something you sincerely adore or love helps get rid of this awkward facial expression.

Depends on the ambient lighting, also balancing flash power to the proper level is important, even if the camera is doing TTL doesn't mean you should trust it...As someone who doesn't use a lot of flash I could go for hours on it :P
