Poochie

Postby Cake » 11 Sep 2008, 22:16

I've been thinking about getting a dog, but I don't know what kind of dog to get. I want a man dog too, nothing froofy, frilly, or any other word that ends in "y". Any ideas?

What most people don't know is that the man in that image is a six-inch scale model.

I had a Royal Standard French Poodle for 13 years. She was 91 pounds of the best dog ever.

i want a smaller dog that i can train from puppyhood. but as for "manly breeds", as long as you train them correctly (ie not as attack dogs or the like) pitbulls are very good dogs. Watch the Dog Whisperer and look for Popeye, the one eyed pitbull that actually made a woman lose her fear over pitbulls. Also, size doesn't matter with manliness, so I also suggest a British Bulldog.

My aunt and uncle have an airedale mix named Rusty, and he is a VERY well behaved dog, but he loves playing rough too. Airedales are a medium sized breed too, so you may like them.

Personally, I really love pugs, they are just too cute. Also, Allen! the pomeranian that kkief02 got is tooooooo cuuuuuuuute.

I've never owned a dog personally. But from experience I can say, if you wan't a friendly playfull dog, a golden Retriever or a Labrador are good choices (You do need to train them a well, they can be sneaky little buggers otherwise) Dutch or German Shepards are also really nice dogs (a lot more manly too, and smart as heck)

But with any dog, you have to train it to know you are alpha, it follows you, and aggression will not be tolerated against anyone that you approve of.

By the way, what sorts of attributes are you looking for in a dog, aside from manly?

I kinda want a smart, playful dog. One that I said say "Hey, Punker. Want to go to the park?" And then he gets all excited and stuff and grabs his leash. That's probably a tad unrealistic, but it paints a nice picture.

I echo Labradors. They're lovable buggers, great friendly dogs.

The various Retrievers are great too, their breeding as sporting dogs makes them slightly more refined and calm, and they have strong instincts of protectiveness and of course, retrieval.

Be sure to research different breeds. Some have genetic predispositions to serious health problems. Golden retrievers typically suffer hip displasia as they get on in years, and certain breeds suffer heart problems and such so it's important to know what might develop in your pooch's future and know about it so you can be prepared to deal with it.

That said, any form of retriever or labrador is a great type of dog to have. Loyal, friendly, intelligent, big and strong, and playful too. They pretty much all have very nice coats as well, although be aware they will shed and do need to be brushed every once and again, especially golden retrievers and a few others.

The thing is, you can't go wrong with a Labrador. My dog is an idiot, but she's super fun to run around with on the beach.
I personally would love to someday have a Rhodesian Ridgeback http://www.iams.com/iams/en_US/jsp/IAMS_Page.jsp?pageID=DBD&breedPage=rhodridg.html
In terms of manliness, how can you go wrong with a dog that was bred and used to hunt lions!

Ridgebacks require a lot of training, though. They're aggresive dogs, and they have strong dominance issues. I'll admit they are strong and impressive animals, but they have tendencies to not cope well with other dogs of the same gender and other pets like cats.

The only dog I've had was a Newfie, who was adorable (didn't get along with the cat though, but that's a different matter), and quite large. I've been around Golden Retrievers and Labradors a lot though, and recommend either of those breeds as well.

Don't like bulldogs or terriers, so I'll have to say Beagle because they're so damn cute. But, I thought you were saying you wanted a 'manly' dog, which a beagle hardly qualifies as?
Actually when it comes right down to it I don't like any of those dogs (sorry!). Inevitably when I have my own place with a yard I'll get a nice big mutt of mixed breed from the SPCA. Whoever's big, playful, and quiet wins!

Not a manly dog. A man dog. Like, not a dog that goes in a purse. Or is meant to have bows tied everywhere.
