Why Are We So Well Behaved?
I was listening to an old LRRCast whilst cycling to work and Graham mentions how the LRR forums has no flaming of the other members. On a previous forum I helped run I had a spat with someone but I never really was violent with words like the other guy. What makes us so well behaved here?

Long story, you don't want to know.
In any case, I think it's partially the large Canadian population of these boards (you Brits and the Aussie's don't hurt either), and that the forums revolve around a single major focal point (LRR), and we aren't that large of a forum.

Canadians do seem, on the whole, nicer than Americans.
I mean, of the few more aggresive and argumentative personalities on the forums, myself included from time to time, we're mostly Americans.
I think the trick, though, is that LRR is intellectual comedy, and it draws intellectual posters. Such people are generally more patient, polite, and reasonable.

If you get the stereotype joke, polite-arrogant. All Canadians I've spoken too are really nice so you don't have anything to worry about I think.

I'm part French Canadian... does that make it better?
Well, I said on the whole.
Just because the average American is a drooling idiot who willingly shovels down the crap the American media and government feed them to keep them quiet doesn't mean all of us are like that. /cynicism
Now, I like the French Canadians, truth be told. Certainly much more than I like the French. I just wish the noisier ones would pipe down about secession and just learn to live with their fellow Canadians peacably.

I wouldn't say that is the average American. I doubt more than 10% of Americans fit that description, but that's the reputation we seem to have anyways.

Now, you're getting confuzzled. Canadians are Americans. Presumably you mean Canadians and USAires.
Sorry, I'm trying to make that point stick everywhere these days, purely for clarity.
Also, on the note of "good behaviour amongst forum members": Corax, Wraith, and Matt.

You know for being such "well mannered" people you certainly know how to phrase things to pat yourself on the back while making me and other Americans sound like complete bastages.
Just putting that out there

If I ever come up with something witty or interesting I'm not going to display it in plain sight for you buffoons to steal away.

This is the main reason. Among the frequent posters, everyone pretty much knows everyone else. Where you get a lot of the immature flaming and so on is in large communities where other posters are just a forum name and an avatar: the people you flame aren't actually people to you, because you don't know them. Kind of like road rage: you aren't getting mad at a person; you're getting mad at a car.
The other reason is that these forums generally keep away from highly contentious topics like politics and religion (outside of the Scientology threads, that is).

I think it also helps that the moderators are ever-present community members. When you post something on here, you expect Graham or Matt or likely several of the crew to read it.
