LRR Steam Group Hacked

Postby CyberTractor » 21 Jan 2009, 18:59

Someone in the LRR steam group was duped and is sending out messages to people asking you to go to a website and enter your information. (This isn't hacking, per se, but people usually say it is anyway.)

Remember folks, don't do this. That's how they get your information.

I didn't actually accept the invite to chat, but thanks for the warning, CT. Now I know what it was.

What if you were at home and then college and at home your internet is not that good and therefore you aren't on the internet enough to know whats fake and what's not, so you you believe the fake message and put in your information.

You know, hypothetically, of course.

Changing your password would do the trick, wouldn't it.

Depends. If the email address associated with your account uses the same password, they could probably still retrieve it.

I would change everything that used the password you entered in to that website to something else.

Theoretically, of course.

Do we have a Username associated with this that we can block from inside Steam?

*WARNING* is the only name that appears in the aliases. I think because it was a different IP there was no long of previous aliases, but that's just a guess.

I can't read the text through the JPEG artifacts and image resizing.

I got this message earlier this evening. I reported the incident to the Steam support site.

Because the LRR group is public, anyone can join. The account sending these messages is a brand new one created specifically for the purpose of luring people to the site mentioned. No-one was necessarily duped in order for this to happen. Regardless: it is a problem, so thanks CyberTractor for bringing it to the attention of the forum.

That doesn't make it any bigger than just clicking the thumbnail in the thread.

Okay, here's the text of the message.

*WARNING* Due to recent hack attempts we are monitoring Steam accounts VERY closely. We have noticed 2 different IPs have logged into your account recently. In order to verify that YOU are the correct owner we require you to log in (http://www.SteamSecurity.net.tf). Once you log in, your IP will verify who you are and be set to your steam account. *WARNING*

While were on the topic of Steam how do I know which server people are on for TF2 Sat/Sun. I try to get on but I don't know even anyone else is even on.

I tried to play too, i looked in the friends list for the lrr group to see who was playing TF2 and joined, but it didnt seem like there was more than one person in a game. I'd like to play with some people from here, though i suppose id have a pretty crappy ping. And I'm not so great at it.

Sweet desktop by the way, Cyber.

I have a policy of not chatting with people I don't already know, plus WARNING was reading as offline so chatting of any kind would have been tricky. I just closed the window.

I tried to chat with him/her/it.
He did not respond..
I'm still trying to figure out why someone didn't tell me how awesome Muse is.
