Spam; an enviornmental hazard

Postby Smeghead » 15 Apr 2009, 08:08

Time for more news.

Spam mails sure are irritating, but little do we know but they are actually an environmental hazard. According to a McAfee, spam mails consume 33 terawatt-hours of electricity each year; enough to power a 60 watt light bulb for 57039776 years or to put it in a easier way; about as much as 5 nuclear reactors (don’t take my word for it on the reactor count, that was just what was mentioned in the original article).

So if you wanna save the environment and help solve the worlds energy problems; Kill a spammer :P

Spam sushi is actually surprisingly good. And the circumstances I mentioned is simple, 1500 metres up a mountain in a cold hut after snowshoeing all day, any way of cramming fat, protein, and salt into your gullet is a godsend. Thinly sliced and fried it is actually really good. Ask yourself this - have you ever actually had Spam? If no, shut up.

I concur that spam is yummy when cooked and prepared properly.
thinly sliced marinated in honey mustard and then fried is pretty good.

I like spam but then the British have a record of eating bizarre stuff.

Though there is meat in this article, it's attached Thompson's emails evidently.

I bought Spam once. Fried up, it was fairly tasty. Cooked in an oven, it was horrible.

People like to make fun of tinned Spam but how many have actually tried it? Few, I wager.

Hawaii, being one of the spam capitals of the world, have developed astounding things to do to that most humble meat product. They are often delicious.

If spam uses up the equivalent power of roughly five nuclear reactors, is there any way we could harness that power?

That wouldn't really help, comparatively there's only a small handful of spammers, it's the spambots that are actually using up the energy, at least that's my understanding.

Without human spammers to maintain and feed new information to the spambots/networks, most of them could be hunted down and eliminated within a fairly short amount of time. Unless they developed sentience, then we're all screwed.

Spam makes me want to die. I prefer "Real" meat, not some random collection of hobo's and raccoon's in a tin.

SP(iced h)AM is pretty tasty. Definitey more so than other potted meats I've had. I like grilled SPAM and cheddar sandwiches, and fried SPAM.

Spam emails do add some value to the world (in the form of LOLs). See for example this:

On the topic of spam (the annoying, digital variety), those that create it shall be terminated and sent to a special hell. Y'know, the one reserved for child molesters and people that talk in the theater.

On the topic of Spam (the meat product), if prepared properly, it can be quite tasty. Hawaiians have really done some wonderful things with it. And, it just occurred to me, I should ask my Russian friend if there are any good Russian recipes with it. There'd be a historical reason for that, if anyone is curious.

Slightly different in nature, I initially read the title of this thread as a command: "Spam an environmental hazard!" As in "Quick! Do something annoying and repetitive towards environmental hazards, like oil spills!" Made me laugh.

McAfee wrote:spam mails consume 33 terawatt-hours of electricity each year

Interestingly I can't find anything in the actual report from McAfee about their assumptions, metrics, methodology, or even just a simple margin of error. This is not science - I call educated guess at best on their results. I would question whether or not the "power usage of spam" is at all quantifiable in the first place, let alone with any degree of certainty or accuracy. :?

That aside, sure; spam mail (including the paper-based variety) is a waste of resources. Duh. :P

As far as the food goes, I haven't had it in many years but I don't remember it being too repulsive. Mainly just salty. :)

On the meat variety, very important is also the quality of the spam. Even though all spam is cheap, you have the cheap dirt variety and the dirt cheap variety. The latter is most often a lot tastier than the former, whatever way it is prepared. :P
