Doin' the MP3 Shuffle

Postby Trisha Lynn » 29 May 2009, 13:26

Not sure if this would qualify as a forum game, but I'm sure the guys/gal would move it if they needed to:

Rules: Bring up your current music dispenser of choice, and write down the titles/artists/albums (if you know 'em) of the next ten songs. I'll start:

1. "Your Song" - Ewan MacGregor from the Moulin Rouge 2 soundtrack
No, not the first one. The second one. I know, I suck and I'm a girl. Let's move on.

2. "Bad Babysitter" - Princess Superstar
I have NO idea where I got this one, but I love listening to it at work because it gets me chair-dancing and it's a little subversive to be working on real estate reports and then listening to a song about a lolita.

3. "Drummer" (Live) - Cowboy Mouth from Live at the Zoo
I SWEAR, this is one of the best bands ever. If you ever get a chance to see these guys perform life, DO EEEET.

4. "San Francisco Bay Blues" - Eric Clapton from the Unplugged album
Love the kazoo solo, love the bounciness of the song.

5. "A Good Run of Bad Luck" - Clint Black
Yeah, I like country music... some of it. Clint Black's one of the good guys. Also, it was on the Maverick soundtrack, but I've always questioned its inclusion because the song is about playing craps and the movie is about playing 5-card stud poker.

6. "Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing" - Chris Isaak
I think this is from the Eyes Wide Shut soundtrack, but I'm not sure. Chris Isaak is so swoon-worthy.

7. "Castanets" - Alejandro Escovedo
Not sure where I got this from (probably Metachat folks), but I am so glad it's in my iPod.

8. "If I Wrote You" - Dar Williams
So much female-empowerment in all her music, and it's such a lovely song.

9. "You Don't Love Me" - Dawn Penn
No, this is not the jazz standard. I just checked; it's a reggae-sounding song.

10. "I Wanna Be Sedated" - The Ramones
Well.... yeah. Who wouldn't want this on their iPod at work?

Bonus Track! "Common People" - William Shatner from the Has Been album
Again, a no-brainer, especially considering where I work and what I do all day.

1. London Calling - Clash
2. Pour Some Sugar On Me - Def Leppard
3. Wonderwall - Oasis
4. Russians - Sting
5. I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry (Over You) - The Beatles
6. Bravi! - Repo! The Genetic Opera Soundtrack
7. Dinner is Served - Hans Zimmer (Pirates of the Carribean 2 Soundtrack)
8. Come Undone - Duran Duran
9. Queen - I want to Break Free
10. Vanishing- Barenaked Ladies

Actually a fairly good sample of the music on my computer.

1: Rolling Stones - You Can't Always Get What You Want
2: Megadeth - Angry Again (didn't even know I had that on here.)
3: Weezer - Hold Me
4: Green Day - St. Jimmy (screw all the haters i still like them.)
5: The Human League - Keep Feeling Fascination (BWAAHAHAHA awesome)
6: The Pogues - White City
7: Brown Brigade - WD-80 (yup i'm one of the 10 people that bought Brown Sounds album.)
8: Belvedere - Class A Jacjass
9: Gary Jules - Mad World.
10: Buddy Holly - Peggy Sue

Damn I need to add a bonus too. The Chieftans - Dueling Chanters are rocking the bagpipes too damn hard.

Overall that's a pretty good cross section. normally it randomizes like crap, and I'll get all Great big Sea for an hour.

Warning: Eclectic overload inbound! Shuffle always gets weird for me.

1) Bounce That - Girl Talk
A track from Night Ripper, and the first Girl Talk song I ever heard. Thanks Kathleen!

2) Proper Hoodidge - Amon Tobin
From the great album Out From Out Where, but then all things Amon Tobin are great.

3) Neverland - The Knife
You know, we made fun of this album in a Whatever Thing a few years back, but fuck damn I love Silent Shout. It's the perfect rainy bus ride music.

4) Suitcase '88 - Apollo 440
Not an indicative track, considering the brilliantly titled Dude Descending a Staircase is really more of a concept album, and this is one of those instrumental linking tracks.

5) Left Me For Dead - Rob Dougan
You've heard some of his tracks on the various Matrix soundtracks, but damn I love this album. Sure all the songs sound very similar, but he's so good at it. This is one of my favourites, lyrically. And he plays all the strings himself!

6) Pope Joe's Theme - Gustaf Grefberg
See, this is the problem with having video game soundtracks on your iTunes... shuffle gets weird. Much as I love Escape From Butcher Bay.

7) Memory Loss - Deltron
Deltron 3030 is a great hip-hop album. You've got Del tha Funky Homosapien and Dan the Automator... what more do you need? Maybe Damon Albarn, but that's what the Gorillaz are for.

8) Only Time - Enya
Look just... shut up ok. It's from a Lord of the Rings soundtrack and... I kind of like Enya. Blame my mum.

9) Around the World/Harder Better - Daft Punk
Is there a better live album than Alive 2007? Probably. Is there a better DJ mix album than Alive 2007? Yes, I have one*. But it's just SO GOOD. Possibly their best album, just because it takes great albums and condenses them into awesome.

10) Fox Problems - Jimi Hendrix vs Jimi Bo Horne vs Eric B & Rakim
From one of the stellar Bootie USA bootleg mix albums (2006 in this case). Not one of my favourites from this album, but pretty entertaining regardless. Check out the rest of the albums.

While waiting for my laundry to dry, I went ahead and did this!

1. Ace of Spades by Motorhead
2. Naomi by Neutral Milk Hotel, as coverd by Jopl and the Extreme Bandits
OK, just a bit of explaining on this one. Jopl and the Extreme Bandits is kind of a joke band between three friends of mine who are all in bands (Noah from "Tommy Tomorrow", a pop electric band, and Joel and Steve from "Rheumatoid Arthritis", an improv grindcore band (Fun fact: I was a guest artist on two Rheumatoid Arthritis albums)). They decided to combine their bands and do some songs. The results are actually pretty good. Except "Somewhere Down the Line". That's just an experience....

3. I Love You by Barenaked Ladies
4. The Sharp Hint of New Tears by Dashboard Confessional
5. Jason Lee by the All Girl Summer Fun Band
6. Sloop John B by the Beach Boys, as coverd by Me First and the
Gimme Gimmies
7. Blinking Lights (For Me) by Eels
8. May the Living be Dead (In Our Wake) by Flogging Molly
Easily one of the best live bands I've ever seen, which is kind of weird to say since I got kicked in the face and lost a pair of glasses to that show. But still, one of the best live bands I've seen.

9. Hard Times by Ray Charles
10. Get Happy by J.J. Johnson

And I really need to add this...
Bonus Track: The theme song to the 1990s X-Men animated series.

And, to make Graham less embarrassed about liking Enya, there's this. I am a huge fan of Bjork. Like seriously, huge. Everything she's done, from the Sugarcubes (her punk band in the late '80s) to Gling-Glo (her lounge jazz album) to Medulla (which basically just consists of 90 minutes of grunts and beatboxing).
Ask me about the Steve Flaig Experience.

Hmm.. I wonder how many of these will be in English. I don't usually listen to all my music on random, so this could be interesting.

1. Bruce Cockburn - If I had a Rocket Launcher (forgot I even had that!)
2. Tori Amos - Space Dog [live] (what a weird song)
3. The Pillows - Pain (A-7) (from the FLCL soundtrack)
4. Kleptomaniacs - Bado niko (kiswahili rap)
5. Imogen Heap - I am in love you (love her, but not this song...)
6. Michael Crawford - It Only Takes a Moment (Wall-E sountrack :))
7. Escaflowne OST - Deja Blue (music box version of the opening theme)
8. Gravitation OST - The First Dimention (...what? >_>)
9. Weezer - Say it aint so (oh yeah... alright....)
10. Frou Frou - Old Piano (Immi again)

Lets see, four sountracks, but I got more English that I expected.

For the purposes of this exercise, I'm going to omit any songs from the same artist, because I have lots of discographies and shuffle sometimes tends to pick a bunch of the same band over and over.

1. Foo Fighters - Hey, Johnny Park!
Man, I love that album (The Color and the Shape). Haven't heard it in a good while.

2. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Hard to Concentrate
Stadium Arcadium also pretty awesome.

3. The Hives - Two-Timing Touch and Broken Bones
...that one came out of nowhere, but I like it.

4. Flight of the Conchords - If You're Into It
HI-larious

5. Broken Social Scene - Time = Cause
This is probably about as close as I get to "eclectic"

6. The White Stripes - Forever For Her (Is Over For Me)
Pretty catchy, decent song.

7. Dan Deacon - Paddling Ghost
I'm not usually big on electronica, but I really like the album Bromst.

8. Led Zeppelin - Black Dog
Totally forgot I had this album. Classic.

9. Beastie Boys - Paul Revere
The little-known precursor to 64k

10. The Beatles - Nowhere Man
At one point I downloaded the entire Beatles discography. There's a lot of random crap and multiple takes in it, but this one's pretty good.

That would be the first ten tracks of the Perfect Dark N64 sound files that I was listening to last nite. I load WinAmp manually so any selection would be the first ten tracks.

Okay, so my first one was my iPod, and I deliberately put mostly kicky songs on it so my ass doesn't drag at the office. My home mix is a little different:

1. "Predigtnot" - Chris Walden
Take one big band jazz orchestra, add a German choir singing in multi-part harmony, and this is what you get. I picked it up from the freebie bin at my old office because it sounded intriguing.

2. "Yakety Yak" - The Coasters
One of my exes loved classic rock, but this is pre-classic rock... I have no idea where this one came from, frankly.

3. "Too Hip, Gotta Go" - The Stray Cats
Awww... Brian Setzer when he was young, and hot, and punk-rockabilly. I miss that guy.

4. "Any Way You Want It" - Journey
I just realized that the first verse of this song reminds me of opening theme music for a slapstick Japanese anime show. o.o

5. "Hard to Say" - Dan Fogelberg
I believe this one was taken from a friend who had a lot of 80s music and when I told him to just load up my thumb drive for now and I'd be back for the rest later, I think he put this on it. Erm... *deletes*

6. "The Calling" - Eric Clapton/Santana from Supernatural
Ah, there's the stuff. Two guitar gods, on the same song. Please don't tell me if this is on Guitar Hero because I highly doubt anyone could do it justice.

7. "Hootchie Kootchie Man" (live) - Eric Clapton/Others from the 2001 Concert for New York
Would it be a sacrilege if I said that I prefer Clapton as a blues man and not a rock man?

8. "Banana" - Carne Cruda
Hee hee. What a silly song with a great beat. *ships to iPod*

9. "Anywhere But Here" - k.d. lang
Huh, another song whose origin I don't know. Sounds awesome, though. *keeps*

10. "Man in Black" - Johnny Cash
Ah yeah... good way to end this round.

2.) Under my Skin, by Jukebox the Ghost
3.) Down to Rest, by O'Death
4.) Only One, by Bess Rogers
5.) Blackbird, by The Beatles
6.) Into the Darkness, by Nobuo Uematsu (from Final Fantasy IV: Celtic Moon)
7.) Sad and Sorry Song, by Dan Mills
8.) Janet, by Kiss/Kiss
9.) Verses to a Song, by Quintus
10.) Be OK by Ingrid Mihaelson

OK, I rarely do these, and I think you'll quickly see why... but I'll give it a shot.

I'm skipping all the language lessons (otherwise you'd keep seeing "Pimsleur-French" and "Pimsleur-Japanese" popping up...)

1. Romance in F, Op. 118 No. 5, Brahms, played by Robert Silverman
(Silverman is one of Canada's Premier pianists! Ha! Honestly, I have a ton of Brahms, because I love his stuff. It's powerful, but subtle and great to study to.)

2. Creature Create, Final Fantasy X2 Piano Collections, Nobuo Uematsu
(An absolutely insane song, if you've ever seen the sheet music for it... I love the X-2 collection because there's a lot of jazzy stuff in it, along with a lot of really sad songs. I haven't even played the game, but the music is fantastic.)

3. Nice Work if you Can Get It, Billie Holiday, The Essential Billie Holiday
(Got this old-timey static behind it, and a really tinny muted trumpet... absolutely fantastic. Makes me want to get up and dance... in sepia.)

4. Symphony No. 5 in C Minor Op. 67: Mvt 3, Allegro, Beethoven
(AUGH I LOVE THIS MOVEMENT. Easily beats out the first movement for best use of the "da da da DUM" fate theme that everyone knows. It's just so tight... it's woven in there with such spectacular intricacy, and it's still really powerful.)

5. Another Day, RENT Motion Picture Soundtrack
(Oh lord so embarassing... why do I even have this in here? XD I don't even like this song. Though there's some of the Rent soundtrack that I do like... haha, but not this one. Way too Andrew Lloyd Weber guitar-rock-ballad for me. And the lyrics are pretty awful. Sorry.)

6. Purpose, Avenue Q Broadway Soundtrack
(THERE we go. There's a good musical soundtrack. XD Haha, a friend gave this to me in senior year of high school, and I've listened to it hundreds of times since then, and have seen the show live [when it came to Ft. Lauderdale, which is actually kind of ironic...]. Whatever. Great songs, and really impressive that they do the whole show with just five instruments.)

7. Variations on "Ah vous diraje maman", Mozart
(Wow. Forgot I had this one. Brings back memories... studied this in a musicology class once. Kind of crazy how it rips the theme apart and plays it backwards, forwards, sideways... it's absolutely everywhere. Unfortunately it's really hard to find a good recording of this because nearly every "Baby Genius" CD has a crappy recording of half of this played on a toy piano. If you're not impressed, wait until about 7 minutes into the song, when it sounds like someone took a piano and the pianist into a blender and pressed puree.)

8. 1812 Overture Op. 49, Tchaikovsky, played by the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra
(iTunes is pulling out big-name songs today... actually Budapest plays it really slowly, which is kind of strange. Also, no digital cannons, which is kind of nice on my ears. Humorously, I can't listen to this song now without thinking of the Napoleon level in Psychonauts. Lawl.)

9. New York, New York, Frank Sinatra, The Very Good Years.
(Oh goodness you guys are going to think I'm 800 years old. But... I guess I am. Frank Sinatra X Ella Fitzgerald FOR EVAH. Actually, I wonder if there's anyone who ships that.... ANYWAY. Not my favorite Sinatra song, not by a long shot. But not bad.)

10. Melissa, ak.homma & Porno Graffitti, Fullmetal Alchemist Original Soundtrack 1
(Huge soft spot for this song... I still remember watching the original subbed FMA late at night, in the dark, while my parents slept, on my computer, and watching the whole thing, opening and closing included. Great songs... good memories of high school).

And oh lord, bonus number 11 is ABC by the Jackson 5, so I think I'll just stop before I kill anyone else with my weird taste in music.

01: Sleeping In - The Postal Service
02: Drawing Down The Moon - Gaia Consort
03: Little Wonder (Live) - David Bowie
04: The Crab Song - Faith No More
05: Jefferson Experiment - Wellwater Conspiracy
06: Slowboat - Sparks
07: Galamb Egyedül - Venetian Snares
08: (I) Get Lost - Eric Clapton
09: Castle Keep - Naked City
10: Beasts In The Wood - Spin Doctors

I was convinced I'd end up with all stuff I detest, but although I'm not that keen on some of the individual songs, it's actually an interesting mix: indie electro-pop, folk rock, industrial, breakcore, alt metal, psychedelic, funk rock and avantgarde. Still too rock-oriented, though: no jazz, world or classical music.

Naked City FTW!
