Electronica, ambient, trance or trip-hop is always fairly soothing.

I usually do some pretty boring stuff on WoW before I go to bed and I find that helps. This consists of running my auctioneer addon, looking for really low prices on popular AH items, buying tham, and reselling them. It usually makes me want to fall asleep in my chair.

I put on some Coldplay or Jack Johnson. Those usually calm/bore me to sleep.
There is sarcasm in my post. If you are smart, you should be able to find it.

I can never sleep more because of my own paranoia then anything. I'm normally up until 5:30 AM now as a preventative to being scared so much that I can't sleep, which is a pretty depressing state. Trust me; nothing is worse then being afraid to look out your window because their might be something there, but afraid not to because you might miss it as it comes in your house to eat you. Plus, I've recently been playing Dead rising before my 360 red-ringed, and it is just freaking me out now. That sleep deprivation video they made? I immediately was less then impressed. I've been awake for three days at a time while going to school, but missing a day of sleep is regular at least once a week. As for what I do, it normally changes as to what I'm into. My standards for sleep deprivation are LRR videos, Wil Wheaton's blog, webcomics, and video games. Although, reading has taken an increased stake in my late night life that consists of nothing.

Steps:
1. Run toward bed at full speed.
2. At the last second, jump, launching your head toward something hard (wall, head of bed, spouse)
3. concussion
4. ???
5. sleep... and PROFIT!

Re: Things to do when you can't sleep
Usually what unintentionally keeps me awake is Garry's Mod, but oddly since I haven't been sleepy at all tonight (It's 6:30 AM as I type this and I was trying to get to sleep at ~4) I haven't actually touched it.
Mostly what I've been doing is getting ahead with some of my comic work, I've actually scripted almost every comic right up until the one made right before my trip to BC next month.

I usually just drink beer and watch either a really long movie or a TV series on DVD (Band of Brothers is a common one for me). On really tough stretches of sleeplessness. . . porn has been known to make an appearance, too.

Writing. It's the most intellectually draining thing I know of.
