Inglourious Basterds

Postby Genghis Ares » 22 Aug 2009, 17:44

I just came back from seeing this a few hours ago.

I enjoyed it, but there were a few things I disliked about it. I liked the way it was presented and even though the story is broken up into chapters, I think it worked well. All the characters were good. One gripe I have is that the story, while easy to follow, I don't really like how it goes. The story itself is just kind of makes me rol my eyes and question why they progressed they way they did. I don't hate the story, and it definitely works by the end, I just didn't like how several thins happened.

Some scenes tended to drag on as well. The first scene and the scene in the cellar/bar just felt like an eternity with a fuckton of dialogue and suspense that is painfully dragged out to its obvious conclusion. The dialogue itself is fine it just too much padding for me.

Anyway, what are your thoughts?

As I told the LRR IRC earlier today, I refuse to see that movie on the basis of spelling.

Pedant. And coming from ME, that's saying something.

Seriously, it's from a proper name for a military unit - 'The Basterds'. Proper nouns throw all the rules out the window:

"It's Jhinovsky."
"How do you spell that?"
"S-M-I-T-H"
"What?"
"They're all silent, nevermind." :)

Its a Tarantino movie.
Therefore, its awesome!

You can watch Inglorious Bastards instead.

Actually since its the name of the movie it is the correct spelling of the word (name).

If someone was named Neil would you refuse to talk to him because his name is not spelled Niel?

A name is different than a word.

Interview with Tarantino
Long story shot:
Inglourious Baasterds is the "Tarantino way of spelling it."
Nothing to do with "The Basterds" ("But the 'Basterds'? That's just the way you say it: Basterds." - from here) and all to do with mis-spelling.

Plus it's "Inglorious".

Not saying I support not seeing a film because of mis-spellings, just putting it out there that he's not wrong to be at least miffed by it.

Oh, he's perfectly entitled to be miffed by this, regardless of how silly that would be.

I liked it. Agree that the first scene did drag on and on and on but I also felt that some characters didn't get enough time either.

I thought Hugo would get more time since they built him up a bit when introduced.

i really enjoyed it. the dialogue was long but i thought a lot of it was well constructed and smart.

my friend said it was very cruel and violent, i on the other hand have seen so many japanese films that i was completed desensitized

I thoroughly enjoyed it as well.

A note on the "fuckton of dialogue" complaints: Tarantino is well known for putting long, unnecessary but interesting conversations in his movies. It should be expected when you go in.

Yeah, that's sort of like complaining a Michael Bay film has explosions.

Very well done, but too uncomfortably tense for me to enjoy it fully. However, top marks to Tarantino for taking libities with history, and the Nazi officer deserves an Oscar.

The problem I had wasn't really the long dialogue, I know QT does that all the time. The problem was the scenes with the long dialogue dragged and the tension built up and took so long to release, that everyone knew what was going to eventually happen long before it actually happens.

See, I dislike Michael Bay because he relies on explosions too much. His version of Deus ex Machina is more like Deus ex Plosion (awful wordplay... sorry).

I have no problem with extensive dialogue, but Tarantino tends to stretch it out longer than it needs to be, and it often becomes repetitive or unnecessary quickly.

I was lucky, my roomate warned me that it was a very slowly paced movie. I was prepared for it. I likely would have felt the same was a most of you.

I feel safe in saying this will be my movie of the year.

My question is this. How did BJ Novak get caught by the Nazis?

Long scenes are best when they have abrupt endings.

I wondered that too. The second they got into the truck, I was like, "Did I miss something?"

Also when they first show the Basterds and then the scene where they show Hugo being rescued, there were like 10 of them. However, after the brit shows up, there's only 6 of them. The 2 that die in the celler, the 2 that fight and die in the theatre, and the last 2 at the end. There should be 4 random Basterds still alive.

Well, there IS a war going on, they could very well have been shot and killed at some point.
