Caught 'em all

Postby EnglishMQ » 29 Dec 2011, 14:45

I don't think many of the LRR Team play Pokemon, but I like to think this sketch doesn't have anything that'd be be mutually exclusive to Pokemon fans except names, and I liked this when I wrote it at least, so here it is.

CHARACTERS

LINK
CHALLENGER
CASHIER
CUSTOMER (microscopic cameo)

EXT. FOREST, DAY TIME

LINK is walking through the forest, not focusing too much.

Suddenly he see's a CHALLENGER ahead of him, leaning against a tree, who hasn't noticed him.

LINK stops suddenly and begins to back away.

LINK
Don't make eye contact. Don't make eye contact. Don't make eye contact.

He's about to turn around and run for it when the CHALLENGER notices him and gives a loook of exclamation.

CHALLENGER
Hay! You!

LINK
Oh crap.

LINK turns around and is trying to briskly walk away but the CHALLENGER pursues him.

CHALLENGER
Hay! You! Hay! You!

LINK
No. No. No, not happening.

8-Bit dramatic music begins to play indicating a challenger. LINK notices the music.

LINK
For God's Sake!

The CHALLENGER catches up with him and LINK reluctantly turns around to face him. The CHALLENGER is eager, LINK is irritated.

CHALLENGER
You look like a strong trainer. You'll be a good test for my Bug Pokemon!

LINK
No. Not in the mood.

The challenger hasn't heard him.

CHALLENGER
You look like a strong trainer. You'll be a good test for my Bug Pokemon!

LINK
As I said, no. I need to go... over there now cause... I just don't care.

CHALLENGER
You look like a strong... hay! You can't do that!

LINK has turned around and began to walk away.

LINK
Already doing it!

CHALLENGER
I challenged you to a battle.

LINK
Not in the mood. I decline!

LINK continues to walk away.

LINK
And stop with the stupid music!

The 8-Bit Challenge music stops playing and LINK continues to walk away.

CHALLENGER
Why, do my Bugs creep you out! Scared of me catching you in a web of defeat? Maybe I'll be crawling all over your...

The CHALLENGER has been yelling off screen but now LINK has stormed on-stage and confronted him.

LINK
No! I don't want to fight you because I'm not new to these forests! I walked through here 5 weeks ago when you were busy looking at that tree over there!

CHALLENGER
It's a nice tree.

LINK
I'm not debating how nice the tree is. I just think I'm probably a few leagues above you.

CHALLENGER
My Level 10 Caterpie begs to differ.

LINK
Level 63 Charizard...

CHALLENGER
His string shot attack will...

LINK
...have very little affect against his Flame Thrower.

CHALLENGER
But my Weedle's Poison Sting...

LINK
O.K, you seem to be working on the assumption you'll get a move in. Where did you even get your Pokemon?

CHALLENGER
There's a large patch of grass back there with loads of random encounters.

LINK
Yeah, I went there a week back.

EXT. OTHER FOREST AREA, DAY TIME

We wipe cut to a large grassy area. LINK strides through. He stops and briefly looks back at where he has been.

The area is filled with Pokemon crying out in semi-conciouss pain.

LINK looks guilty for a second.

LINK
Yeah, my bad. On the plus side, Level 40 Golduck!

LINK walks away.

EXT. FOREST, DAY TIME

We wipe cut back to the conversation at hand.

LINK
You wont even land a hit. Well, maybe one move if I use Fly.

CHALLENGER
One of your Pokemon knows a special attack like Fly?

LINK
Yeah, special.

CHALLENGER
But what are you doing here than? Walking?

LINK
Because I'm bored! I beat the Elite Four and the Kanto League than went on to defeat the Elite Four 50 times to see if anything special happened.

CHALLENGER
Did it?

LINK
Two of them had mental breakdowns and I was bared from defeating them any more. I think one of them is on medication.

CHALLENGER
What have you been doing since than?

LINK
I'm kind of just wandering now, trying to find a something to do now I'm the best, like no one ever was, or ever will be.

LINK sighs and is sad.

CHALLENGER
So what's your name?

LINK
Oh, Link.

The CHALLENGER looks bemused my this name.

LINK
It seemed kind of funny at the time.

CHALLENGER
You know, if you need something to do, you could battle me? You look like a good challenge for my bug...

LINK glares at him.

CHALLENGER
...or not. Hay, I know a job you could do!

INT. SHOP, DAY TIME

A CASHIER is sitting at a cash-point eating some candy. LINK walks in, not sure what he's doing.

CASHIER
Hello. Welcome to the Pokemart. How may I help you?

LINK
Yeah, could I have a job?

The CASHIER pauses for a second in thought.

CASHIER
Sure.

Credits.

INT. SHOP, DAY TIME

LINK has finished serving a CUSTOMER who walks away.

He sighs and is still sad.

LINK
No, still all pointless.

A drop down menu appears with the Option: Start New Game available. Yes this isn't exactly how Pokemon does it but I don't care.

Start New Game is selected, LINK is startled briefly as there is an all consuming Flash of White.

THE END

While the script is alright, there aren't that many actual jokes here, and the idea is not all that original either. Pokemon parodies have been done like all over the web.
All I really need is love, but a little chocolate now and then wouldn't hurt.

well, i do admit, i quite easily read link as paul and challenger as matt, waZ up there has a point. nothing new or overly exciting here until the idea of him working of a chashier arose. but then you didn't really do much with it.

the concept of 'what to do once you've caught 'em all' does still have potential, even if pokemon parodies have almost all been done.
your best bet, i believe, is to rewrite it as short scenes of the pc attempting to adjust to life, now he's the very best. perhaps use a framing device of his mom complaining to friend abour how her son, league champion of canada, just sits around all day playing games on his nes/snes/gc/whatever-nintendo-system (the main character always has the most recent nintendo console in their room), and how irritating it is. ('could he at least go out and meet some girls?' "moOoOom, arcainine's set fire to the bed again!" 'for goodness sakes, son! just go buy a new one, you have plenty of money left!').

actually... i might give it a try myself...

I kept imagining Link as Link from the Zelda games.
I fight for TRUTH! JUSTICE! And DONUTS!

...not really the first two.

Problem with this would probably be copyright violation.
Not sure, but I think that might be an issue due to the fact that it includes copyrighted characters.
The only ones that face reality are the ones too stupid to duck when they see it coming!

it's a parody and thus fair use. then again, i don't know how canada law works. i assume they're all governed by canadaman up there.

By Canadian law you are off the hook as long as you say sorry and the wronged party accepts the apology, and nobody up there would ever be rude enough not to.

Not bad, but I don't think it'd be funny enough to enough people. I definitely think you should keep trying, though. WaZelda is right, there are a lot of pokemon parodies, but I'm sure you can come up with a good script for something.
