This is inspired by a vaguely remembered scene from Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth.
EXT FIELD, where two characters stand watching sadly as a third walks into the distance.
CHARACTER 1: Don't feel sad - It was never meant to be. His destiny lies with another.
CHARACTER 2: How can you know that?
CHARACTER 1: Well, he's a fictional character, so everything he does, and the fate he will meet, is all controlled by the script writer.
CHARACTER 2: But if he's a fictional character, then does that mean-
CHARACTER 1: Yep. We're fictional too. Not an iota of free will for either of us.
CHARACTER 2: How does that not just make you want to shoot yourself?
CHARACTER 1: Oh, I do.
[Beat]
CHARACTER 1: The script writer won't let me.
