If I was to watch a musical at this moment

Postby JesterJ. » 05 Sep 2008, 22:26

What should it be? I feel like there is so much on my list, but I can't think of it right now. Poke my brainstem, throw out ideas of good musicals that I should see.
Keep in mind that my favorites are The Producers, Avenue Q, Little Shop of Horrors. Also up there are Anything Goes, Bugsy Malone, and Honk! (on a second tier.)

Reefer Madness. I saw it just a few days ago. It was quite good. The music is still stuck in my head and driving my wife insane.

Oh, just adding to my list, Urinetown is a fantastic, fantastic musical. The music itself isn't too great, but it's a hilarious show to see; if you get a chance, even if you don't like musicals, SEE IT.

Reefer Madness? Hrmm.. Not on Surfthechannel. :( But I'll keep it in mind, thanks!

I'd say Moulin Rouge (but I'm horribly bias, it's my favorite movie <3)

One that is a little unknown is "into the woods" I liked it when I was younger but haven't seen it in a long time.

Already done tonight.
@Moulin Rouge: I refuse to see it on principle; it has been talked about and hyped up so much that I relate it to Rent in my mind, which is not a good thing.
@Oklahoma: I never really liked it very much...Singing in the Rain, on the other hand, is fantastic, but I just saw it the other day.

I luvs the suggestions <33, I'm just kind of a dick

Edit: Into The Woods I've heard is FANTASTIC, but also a bit...heavy. Which at the moment I'm not into, but I'll add that to my list of thingstosee.

Mamma Mia?

I don't watch musicals, and the trailer looked like fail.... but I've heard people like it.

Hey Jester if its not too much trouble could you list some other ones you've liked? I've already seen most of the ones posted in here and a musical sounded fun.

Other ones I've liked? Sure:

Grease
The Music Man
The Wiz
Li'l Abner
Anything Goes <-- Highly recommended, Cole Porter is outstanding.
Annie (shut up, it's cutesy and fun sometimes.)
The Jungle Book
Seussical <-- Seuss in a musical. Pretty damn awesome.
Honk! (Like Allen!, it has a ! at the end of it's name. *facepalm*)
Bugsy Malone
The Wizard of Oz
The Producers
Avenue Q
Little Shop of Horrors
Urinetown
Rent (was really not too bad, but SO OVERHYPED.)
Fame! (! again.)
Footloose
Dreamgirls <--Some really great numbers, but also some of the most boring.

Many many more, but I'm hitting a block right now. Urgh.
I'm picky about selections, but when I find one I like I'm pretty hooked. This goes for bands as well. I can listen to one artist/album/show for days, weeks, even months without it getting boring (which I've done for The Producers, Honk!, Avenue Q, Little Shop of Horrors, Anything Goes, a few more.)

Dr. Horrible and The Rocky Horror Show are also great. Though the latter is best watched with a crowd.

The Robber Bridegroom was great, though I don't know if there is a video version of it around.

Best watched with a crowd, but never with your parents. This crowd must consist of over 7 people, varied sexes.

Just as a by-the-by kkief, Avenue Q, Little Shop, and The Producers (specifically Producers) are my top 3 and recommendations, if you haven't seen/heard any of those.

I saw Avenue Q on Broadway with the original cast. :D Signed posters and everything. Everyone should listen to some of it, especially since people here like comedy.

I like Sweet Charity. Some of the jokes are very subtle, which I like very much, and Shirley MacLaine is beautiful and hilarious.

Moulin Rouge is a pretty good musical. You should see it at least once. Its not really comparable to Rent since Rent is all about "I HAVE AIDS!!!! AIDS AIDS ADIS!!! *insert Angel being cool* NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, SHE'S DEAD!" and Moulin Rouge is about psychedelic visuals and awesomeness.

Cannibal the Musical is always fun to watch. By Matt Stone and Tray Parker in their college years.

Some people like Westside Story, though I can't stand it.

I can't stand Mamma Mia, mainly because I can't stand ABBA.

Billy Elliot is a great movie. Not a musical, but it spawned a musical, so you should watch it anyway.

Into The Woods is a great Sondheim musical, who is the playwright behind Sweeney Todd, which is also a good musical.

Both the 1980's stage-version of Sweeney Todd with Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovette and the new one with Johnny Depp are both worth watching. The former has Angela Lansbury, which plays Mrs. Lovette as very upbeat and eccentric, while the latter shortens the play considerably and cuts out some subplots, but has great visuals, so watch'm both.

<3 HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL! Kidding.

I always liked Singing in the Rain and Gypsy. The 1962 version of Gypsy is pretty good.

Chicago is a pretty good musical. It has a fantastic plot on top of good songs. And Queen Latifah.

I also like Bye Bye Birdie. Pretty cool songs. I haven't seen it in ages, though.
I can't think of a signature.

also, never at a public park viewing. my eyes still burn. oh, the jiggling.

no one has mentioned west side story?
as a semi-musical and absolutely awesome film, i recommend the saddest music in the world. my tapeworm insists upon it.

Moulin Rouge is not a musical.
It is a compilation album of random songs that appears to be edited by a crazed meth-addict with attention problems.

I love musicals, and I couldn't fucking stand Moulin Rouge.

The Blues Brothers (original) is one of my favourite movies; not sure if it's technically considered a musical though.
Edit: Just checked IMDB and it's considered one. I mean, come on, it has James Brown, Ray Charles, Cab Calloway, and Aretha Franklin! What more could you want!

Some ones not mentioned:

Fiddler on the Roof (my personal favorite close 2nd being the Music Man)

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying

And if you're okay with movie musicals as opposed to live performances (I assume you are.) I highly recommend Court Jester, not that it's impossible for it to be performed live, but that it's probably not going to be any time soon.

Oh and Newsies is sweet.

I find it interesting that Blues Brothers is considered a musical. I had never really thought about it before, but I guess the Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles songs do just break out spontaneously, which I would consider the main criteria for a musical.
