Rocky Horror Picture Show is a classic if you wanna watch it with some friends.

If you're just listening to a great musical soundtrack to listen to I would highly suggest the recording of Spring Awakening. You can also find basically the entire show on YouTube. Absolutely incredible. (Can't wait for it to go to Toronto so I can see it.)

As far as musicals go, I suggest Ragtime, Rent, Wicked, Mamma Mia, You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, Hairspray, Les Mis, and Legally Blonde.

Yes I am a dude, but Legally Blonde made me roflmao, especially with Laura Bell Bundy, who had a great singing voice and the same kind of comedic timing (and sometimes the face) of Nicole Sullivan.

I haven't seen Sweeny Todd, but that was on my list (that I'd forgotten), so thanks for bringing that up.
Gypsy I haven't seen nor heard much about, but I've heard some of the music and liked it, so I might check it out.
Chicago: Never seen it or heard music from it, but heard it was great
I do like Bye Bye Birdie, to an extent, but didn't include it in my list. The movie is god-awful, and the only reason I like it is because I performed in it (playing Birdie) which was a lot of fun...but the music is pretty bad, for the most part. And the story is pretty lame, in my opinion.

I wouldn't count The Blues Brothers as a musical, as epicawesome as it is.

I'm still amazed with myself that I haven't seen Fiddler yet, since it's such a famous/supposed to be great musical. Hmm.

NEWSIES: I haven't seen it yet, but I know of a few people that absolutely looooove it. So that goes on my list.

Cabaret is one of the weirdest experiences I've ever had. That movie is...strange. But some great music.

I've heard that Spring Awakening is pretty great, but so far it's only on Broadway (I believe), so no chance of me seeing it except in a crappy personinaudiencevideotaping it way. I was thinking of taking a trip to New York next summer with some friends, and Spring Awakening along with Legally Blonde and In The Heights would be the top 3 for us to see. I've only heard a couple songs out of In The Heights, but they also bothered me in a Rent sort of way, along with a mix of High School Musical (the oh-so stereotyped minorities living in a dilapidated place, Mexican-American so they're all bi-lingual POR FAVOR, and just all of that bothers me. Although I bet if I actually saw it I would like it.)

Just as a by-the-by kkief, Avenue Q, Little Shop, and The Producers (specifically Producers) are my top 3 and recommendations, if you haven't seen/heard any of those.

I have seen all three of those and I agree they are fraking awesome.

Re: Wicked...hm. I think Wicked is overrated. I loved the book, because it was a pretty clever inspection about the way we look at good and evil. The musical watered all that down and added a bunch of forgettable songs, and in my humble opinion the resulting show fellated some pretty significant phalli.

A lot of revues have been mentioned so far. It makes me want to see Tomfoolery just once, even if it weren't good. If you haven't heard of it, don't worry about it. Anyhoo, I'd be the first to say that some producers and writers need to get together and make a JoCo revue. Proposed title: Code Monkey. I've actually given the score a lot of thought...

Final point: Gutenberg! The Musical! was the best play I've ever seen.

Wut? The music is fantastic, in my opinion. Defying Gravity, What Is This Feeling, Popular (is....fun. But also...yeah.) I didn't see much forgettable about it, but meh. Unlike others it wasn't shoved down my throat and talked about constantly (RENT), so I don't despise it on principle.

Anyhoo, I'd be the first to say that some producers and writers need to get together and make a JoCo revue. Proposed title: Code Monkey. I've actually given the score a lot of thought...

Check the JoCo forums; One of his fans (spiff) wrote an entire script for it, so they're pretty hardcore about it, although getting enough fans in the same area (I think the tentative spot was Washington D.C.) to produce/direct/etc. it would be hard.

Well. I actually thought the entire first half was pretty boring, I almost fell asleep toward the beginning. The music didn't really keep me very enthralled, I felt like that was the most boring part of it (Save 1 or 2 numbers). The second half was more interesting, but on the whole it was just sort of a fucked up movie.
