"A million tuesday nights" -- misheard lyrics
I recently heard someone misquoting the lyric "dragging behind you the silent reproach/of a million tear-stained eyes" from 'The Thin Ice' by Pink Floyd. It was quoted as "dragging behind you the silent reproach/of a million tuesday nights."
I know about some of the most common ones like
"kiss the sky" to "kiss this guy" (purple haze)
and "loving an aligator" from "love in an elevator"
...anyone else heard some embarrasing misquoted lyrics?

I am currently listening to this song, first off I remember in high school we always thought he was saying "apple strudel" at what point does he ever say Rockafeller?

Okay, let's get the classics out of the way:
"There's a bathroom on the right"
"Bingo Jed had light on"
"Slow Motion Walter - the fire engine guy"
"The ants are my friends - they're blowing in the wind"
"Wrapped up like a douche"
"I'll never be your pizza burning"
"Hold me closer, Tony Danza"
"Two tickets and a pair of dice"
"I got my mom to sit on you"
but my fave is a misheard AC/DC lyric/songtitle:
"Dirty deeds and the dunderchief" (which my friend thought was some kind of Aussie euphemism for something)
And this provoked me to google things, and omg I have a new time-waster: The Archive of Misheard Lyrics
Holy mother of god:
Genesis' Invisible Touch:
"She seems to have an invisible touch, yeah"
becomes
"He has a hand of invisible duck shit"
*bites lip*
Then there's plenty of Christmas carols that'll be sung MUCH more interestingly in '09:
"Peace on Earth, and mercy mild; Goddamn sinners reconciled"
but...the best one I've seen, that made tears well up in my eyes, and made my wife fear for my health, didn't even have any profanity or sacrelige in it:
Billy Joel's You May Be Right
"You made the rice,
I made the gravy,
but it just may be some tuna fish you're looking for"
(It's food-related; how come Weird Al never picked up on this one?)

Mondegreens! A little info on what we're talking about here.
I've long been familiar with mondegreens (tho' not always the term) due to the way I hear music. Despite excellent hearing it's normally quite difficult for me to make out ordinary song lyrics. Unless the words are spoken clearly & the music doesn't drown them out most of what I hear is phrases, single words & just plain old vowels. This is probably why my own music preference generally leans toward instrumental since most vocals just blend in for me anyway.
Many years ago when I had just gotten into Emerson Lake & Palmer I attempted to transcribe the complete lyrics from their epic (side & a half) song, "Karn Evil 9." The lyrics had always baffled me. I thought I could make most of them out but they were still cryptic & strange. So one night I sat down with the tape & a notepad & just wrote it all out. It didn't help.
The First Impression, Part Two was fairly straightforward but Part One was a little tricky & the Third Impression was all over the place. I still have my original transcription somewhere but I don't think I can find them before this thread dies. The few here are listed from memory because I STILL hear them, despite knowing the correct lyrics.
Mondegreen:
Next upon the bill in a house up on a hill
Real lyric:
Next upon the bill in our house of vaudeville
Mondegreen:
Man of steel pray and kneel
With beaver's blazing church
Thrust into the face of the night;
Draws a blade of compassion
Kissed by godless Kings
Whose jeweled trumpet was by his side.
Walls that no man saw footfalls
The altars of the just
Crushed .... Dust .... in the wind ....
No man yields to flies in my shit...
Real lyric:
Man of steel pray and kneel
With fever's blazing torch
Thrust into the face of the night;
Draws a blade of compassion
Kissed by countless Kings
Whose jeweled trumpet words blind his sight.
Walls that no man thought would fall
The altars of the just
Crushed .... Dust .... in the wind ....
No man yields who flies in my ship...
Mondegreen:
Guardians of a new, clear dawn
Real lyric:
Guardians of a nuclear dawn (very different meaning)
Code: Select all
A mondegreen is the mishearing or misinterpretation of a phrase, typically a standardized phrase such as a line in a poem or a lyric in a song, due to near homophony, in a way that yields a new meaning to the phrase. It should not be confused with Soramimis, which are songs that produce different meanings than those originally intended, when interpreted in another language.
The American writer Sylvia Wright coined the term mondegreen in her essay "The Death of Lady Mondegreen," which was published in Harper's Magazine in November 1954. In the essay, Wright described how, as a young girl, she misheard the final line of the first stanza from the 17th century ballad "The Bonnie Earl O' Murray." She wrote:
When I was a child, my mother used to read aloud to me from Percy's Reliques, and one of my favorite poems began, as I remember:
Ye Highlands and ye Lowlands,
Oh, where hae ye been?
They hae slain the Earl Amurray,
And Lady Mondegreen.
The actual fourth line is "And laid him on the green." As Wright explained the need for a new term, "The point about what I shall hereafter call mondegreens, since no one else has thought up a word for them, is that they are better than the original."

I was totally having a conversation about this earlier today... There are so many, but the one that sticks out in my mind the most is when we were listening to the radio and the song "Blvd of Broken Dreams" came on and my friend randomly said, "I like pillow fights" needless to say we were all very confused... but she had confused the lyric:
"I wish someone out there would find me"
with
"I wish someone would pillow fight me"
needless to say we laughed for like 20 minutes in that silent can't breathe way...

As a child I thought Tina Turner was singing
"What's love Dr. Doolittle, Dr. Doolittle."
instead of "What's love got to do with it, got to do with it." I used to have a long list of these, but I've sadly forgotten most of them, in the age of the internet where you can easily look up lyrics.
The only other one I have is from the Magnetic Fields song When the Open Road is Closing In. There's a section that is really slurred, and I finally thought I'd made it out to be "The world is an older woman who I will always love." Actual lyric: "The world is a motor inn in an Iowa highway slum." What the hell?

Yeah, I kinda like your lyric more.
I've also found a few misheard lyrics over on kissthisguy.com that seem to scan better and make more sense than the actual lyrics.
I'm not sure if this is a case of mishearing or just of having a bad memory, but my friend was trying to sing "Jimmy crack corn" as "chicken pot pie."
...Yeah, reading that, it can't just be a case of mishearing. But it was hilarious. She then argued that she knew there was some public domain song out there that involved chicken pot pie.
She's an interesting one, she is. And I mean that affectionately.

The only "chicken" songs I can think of are Chicken Noodle Soup and the Chickendance.

Whenever I hear Bad Moon Rising by Creedence, I always hear the chorus:
Don't go 'round tonight,
Well it's bound to take your life,
There is a bad moon on the rise
As:
Don't go round tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There is a bathroom on the rise
I KNOW what the lyrics are, but that's always, always what I hear.

My sister always used to sing along to Kiss'
"I wanna rock and roll all night,
and party every day,"
as, "I wanna rock and roll all night,
and part of every day."
My mom used to answer, "Whew, don't overdo it there," and we'd both laugh while she had no idea what was going on. Good times.

I like the idea of a bathroom rising, eldritch, out of the fog above the crest of a hill. It's just a hilarious image to me.
I recall a friend of mine commonly mis-hears a portion of the chorus from a Blind Guardian song I can't remember the name of(same guy who showed me Fishmaster, linked above).
[edit]It's from The Soulforged. Original version:
And from the flames
As chance would have it
The Soulforged will come into light
[/edit]
Also, an indication of the quality of Bandai's localization, the entire set of subtitles for Inner Universe(opening theme for Ghost in the Shell:Stand Alone Context season 1) seem to be misheard. For example
Mana du Mortes("Watch in Awe," Latin, I believe.)
becomes
Naljubuetes
and
Calling, calling, Spirits, I am calling
becomes
Calling, calling, spirits rise and falling.

It is most definitely 'raw consumers'. The lyrics are in the CD insert, which is where I got it from.
I can't think of a signature.
