That's right. The use of this "simple past" in french makes you look quite pedantic. Nowadays everybody uses the "passé composé" (auxiliary "avoir" or "être" and past participle of the verb).

Well, I thought Graham was speaking German too, even though I'm Dutch myself.
The pronounciation sounded German, but that's also because we don't really use that phrase in that context, the Germans do (not entirely sure about that though).

(P.S. it's spelled "Zeer goed." in Dutch and "Sehr gut." in German. )

There I may use the opportunity to clarify this. The Germans don't really use that phrase in that specific context either. Or at least I never happened to hear it that way

Well, "omni" is Greek and "lingua" is Latin, which were both common lingua franca, so I'm sure that's good enough for anyone.

I would comment in Swiss German, but we have no written language for it, so I'll just tell you in english: I liked it. The german was just the right amount of off to seem like spoken by one of the majority americans/canadians at our university.
