Feigned Ignorance

Postby Emperor Gum » 28 Apr 2009, 06:52

MUM: So I'm making this website for a village fair, and one of the attractions is a 'glory hole'. I've gotta ask them them what it is. Maybe I should call it the 'Famous Glory Hole' to make it sound more attractive.
GUM: ...
MUM: Do you know what a 'glory hole' is?
GUM: I've don't know what they could mean.

What you got?

I've got... one Wikipedia and a pair of fours.
My train of thought is more like a roller coaster that has loop de loops and no safety bars.
I don't know if I'm tall enough to ride.

I actually live near one of those. I'm up and down it at least a half dozen times a week.

D:

I hope you're talking about this defanition:

Code: Select all

A glory hole is an informal term for a large and impressive mine excavation open to the surface. The term can mean any one of a number of things:

A deep mine shaft.
An open-pit mine.
In the block caving method of underground mining, ore collapses from above into a mine tunnel. If enough ore is removed, the ground surface collapses into a surface depression called a glory hole. Examples include the Climax and Henderson molybdenum mines in the U.S. state of Colorado.
Excavations in construction sites may also be referred to as glory holes.

Well, if she's got SafeSearch still turned on, you shouldn't have any worries about her Googling it. If it got turned off...yeah, problem.¹

From the context, it could be the sort of 'underbridge' that WTDavies refers to (and trolls hang around in).

The meaning Jester focused on is iffy; perhaps as a 'landmark' of the fair's fictional world? :?

Possible it's korri's glassblowing term (which I have heard of before), but I'd worry about safety at a village fair that had GLASSBLOWING going on...

Or....it means exactly what you're worried it means, and a) your mum's in for a rude surprise, or b) she's leading a much more exciting life than you imagine, and you're in for a rude surprise...:?

footnote:
1. No, I don't know how to turn Google SafeSearch back on, and have been trying - do you?

Evidently it means something naughty but I'm not sure what it's supposed to be either. Anyway, there are lots of definitions for it.
