Swine Flu!

Postby JesterJ. » 29 Apr 2009, 20:49

Do we really not have a topic on this yet?

What are your opinions on it? Obviously, the media latched onto it like a fat kid on a cupcake. Anything to get more people to watch the News. But at the same time, I think there is some legitimate reason to be concerned: it's a new strain of a (fairly) deadly virus, spread easily, and we don't really have protection against it. Or not super effective protection, at any rate. And it was just recently discovered in Seattle, from an 11-year old kid at an elementary school, and another 5 or 6 people that are probable cases.

So what do you think? Crazy stupid hoax? A totally legitimate threat? Or somewhere in between?

To be honest, its not that big of a deal, I mean yes it can kill you if its left untreated, but all that means is if you get a fever, go to the doctor and get some antibiotics because it is treatable. I think the news is making it out to be a bigger deal than it actually is...

I invoke Lavos on this matter.

If he appears and sees his shadow, the world is doomed.
If he appears and doesn't see his shadow, we're all fine.
If he doesn't appear, he's probably busy molesting little girls again.

Bricks we're shat when SARS broke out and all that did was kill a couple hundred people. This won't do anything, and even if it does we're over-populated as it is and could use with light purge.

its standard flu, the regular one kills about 10K per year this is nothing, we've always known about it, the standard pig can have 3 strains of flu, only A is spreadable to humans. it occasionally happens, and now that its happened a little more people FREAK. itll die down in a few weeks and go back to regular things

As I live in California, it is a serious concern. Is it one to get paranoid and start freaking out over? No. Certainly, I will be more vigilant for flu-like symptoms that appear in my friends and family. And, I'll be even more cognizant of personal hygiene and preventative measures against exposure. But, I'm not worried. Unlike the economy, this will all blow over sooner rather than later.

No! Bad! This is a virus, antibiotics are useless. What are used are antivirals like tamiflu.

And you guys have it right, over 35,000 people die of the regular flu every year in the US. I'll hold on until people are actually keeling over all around me before I worry.

Worried? Do this; wash your hands a lot, and cover your mouth when you sneeze. Boom, you prevented a pandemic.

Except the current strain that's being talked about is the strain in Mexico that's killing healthy young adults, unlike the regular flu.

I don't think there's enough information about this current Swine Flu "pandemic" to either write it off or worry about it.

There is person who resides in the flat above mine. I understand that he is currently somewhere in Mexico.

He is a twat of the lowest order. No doubt if he returns he will most likely attempt to infect us all as a joke. It will not be funny if it turns out he has actually contracted the disease.

This is something of a constant, niggling concern of mine now.

Natural Selection.

Nothing natural about our immune responses in this day and age. We're weak as kittens against bacteria. Actually, to be correct, kittens are much more capable of fighting off infection than us.

Have a bit of tact when speaking lightly of Death though. He might hear.

I appreciate the historical significance of the poem but my first thought was that it needs an appropriate photo of a cat to be pasted upon as a caption.

Sorry about that.

I'll be fine, my immune system is very good and I never use medicine.

To me this is like Foot & Mouth and BSE, it won't hurt you. Watch me get corrected in a week's time.

Well NZ is already in "CRISIS!!1!" mode after 5 school kids brought it back on an exchange. To me all the media attention it's getting makes it seem even more ridiculous! Remember H5N1, the news certainly doesn't, its still the same threat that it was two years ago! I've even had my mate ringing from overseas asking me what he should do because his girlfriend is in Auckland (the place of the apparent "OUTBREAK!"). Sorry if I'm coming off like my balls are in a vice, I'm just sick of how quick everybody is to panic the moment a new disease is found.

P.S.And if the virus does continue to mutate and spread I'll be well prepared :D

Okay, so here's my 5 cents:

1. It's not that bad at the moment.
2. It can get worse if we let it.
3. The papers and TV stations are making a huge fucking deal out of it that doesn't need to exist.
Seriously, there are NO confirmed cases in Australia and they're already putting in articles "What type of mask should you buy to protect yourself from infection?"
Ugh. Maybe when someone in Australia's died of it, then we shit ourselves.

But, if this turns into I am Legend-style chaos, I predicted it first.

I'm always happy to see anything that makes life a bit more interesting, and I'm generally first of any and all to request zombie mayhem, but I kinda doubt it. I think it's being blown a bit out of proportion with the present level of containment.

Mexico is in a bit of a state though.

One of the people I watch very often on youtube and is a knowledgeable chap, Thunderf00t. Here is his two cents on the swine-flu: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8pSPfZFysg

In other words, don't panic, just be reasonable.
