The original Star Trek always seemed dated to me, a remake can't hurt.

Wouldn't it be more of a prequel since it takes place before the events of the original series? I mean yes there are time traveling bits in this movie but still.

To what? I thought it a reimagining of the original series, with this film as a prequal?

it is a sequel.

A character from the old universe, after the events of the old universe, comes back in time, and initiates a change to the time line, spinning this timeline off from the original. the kirk/spock/mccoy/scotty/whoever do not become the same kirk/spock/mccoy/scotty/whoever that we see in the original films, and instead become a slightly different, alternate universe version thereof. This provides justification for modifications made to the established history, while staying within canon and leaving the original storyline unaffected.

it's a sequel.

never really watched any Star Trek though I'm familiar with it, but I'm going to see this movie 'cause it looks like something I'd enjoy.

I'm excited for it, and I'm expecting to like it. I'm a hardcore Trekkie, especially when it comes to the lore and everything (don't display it in much public though). Yes, it will be different, but after the abysmal failures of Nemesis and Enterprise, it needs a good reboot so it isn't bogged down so much from everything in the original continuity. The main problem with Trek is that it grew too fast too quickly in a medium and format that doesn't allow it to keep a close continuity and focus. The Star Wars franchise is huge, and the expanded universe is about as large as you can get (arguably larger than all of Star Trek), but most of that universe came from the books and the like that had the time and freedom to do what they wanted and maintain consistency. With the standalone-show-a-week format, they don't have as much freedom to maintain over-arching stories and constancy as much, as they just always have to put out an episode, and can't always deal with all the background details.

It's a reboot, many things are done just to look cool, and I'll likely enjoy it immensely.

One of the things that killed the film series after awhile was that it got bogged down in alot of technobabble, unless your a trekkie or watch the show alot, your not gonna get what they're saying.

Are you sure you were watching the same film series I was watching?

because the downfall of the first series of films was allowing Shatner to direct, and the downfall of the TNG movies was a misplacement of characters and really poorly considered storylines/villains.

The technobabble has always been super trivial.

There's a number of reasons we could come up with as to why it failed. The one I said is just one the producers of the new movie came up with.

Shatner only directed that one... but that one was awful.
Still Undiscovered Country wasn't bad.

The TNG films started well (Generations is all right, First Contact is GREAT) but then it turned into "The Picard & Data Variety Hour-with Special Guests: The Rest of the Crew" and fell apart in the last two.

That's why I tried to avoid using "killed the series" 6 was great, but 5 was the low point.

this is a more elegant way of saying what I was trying to say. The villains ALSO sucked.

Oh, no doubt.

A good, standard Trek villain who hasn't had their big screen outing yet.

That shot of Shatner climbing up the side of Yosemite was actually him trying to scale his own ego.

Having never seen Star Trek, nor any of it's spin-offs, I began a quest to see the original series and films before the film's release. Well, I finished the original series a week ago, and I've moved on to the movies. I'm on Star Trek V right now, and I'm really getting into the series. I'm hoping that the movie (which I think we can call a reboot of the franchise), puts some new life into the series, and maybe a few years down the line, we'll get a new TV series.

YES! My biggest complaint about Nemesis! They whole-heartedly screwed the pooch on that one.

This. Somebody needs to make a show that is a perfect mix of BSG, Firefly, and Arrested Development. Then I can die happy.

Okay, maybe not Arrested Development. I just really, really liked that show. :(

OK - I saw a sneak preview of the movie this weekend. I don't want to give anything away, because I definitely hate spoilers, but:

It's amazing.

From the very beginning of the movie straight until the credits rolled, I was absolutely enthralled. They really do a great balance of awesome action and well-made character drama. Yes, things are different, and yes, it makes sense for things to be different. I'm not going to say any more than that.

All I can say is, ever since I saw it (on Saturday) I have been clamoring for Thursday to get here so I can go see it again.

And I am a Trek fan. Not as harcore as some others here, but I was hugely into TNG, and I know my fair share of TOS. Also, I saw it with a group of hardcore Trek fans (including one VERY big fan of TOS) - all of us were blown away. Completely blown away.

I agree, except that the way they ended the series left a DS9 film franchise highly implausible.

That is true, but they could have filled in more story about the Dominion War, hell they could have made a movie about Garak's time with the Obsidian Order
