New Disney cartoon! (like they used to make them)

Postby korri » 11 May 2009, 22:06

I grew up with a lot of great Disney cartoons, the Lion King, the Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin to name a few. Well, Disney has reopened their 2D animation studios and they are releasing a new movie! Its called the Princess and the Pea.... Is anyone else excited for this, or is it just me?

here's the trailer:

I believe they opened their 2D animation studios for "Enchanted." Tho' it's good to hear they're doing animation the old-fashioned way again, I wish they'd stop ripping off stories in the public domain & do something entirely original.

I'm actually excited for this. I love Aladdin, The Lion King, and Mulan, just to name a few.

Man, I haven't watched a good ole fashioned Disney movie in a long time... I would, but every one I have is VHS, and I've forgotten how to hook the VCR up. Ack! Decade old acronyms!

It's a little upsetting; there have been a number of CGI animated movies in the recent past that have had 2D animations in their closing credit sequences. Some of them have been really stylized too & I would have loved seeing the entire film done that way. It's such a tease.

It looks like it has potential. I'll definitely keep an eye on it. I just hope they don't cram it full of pop references and ethnic stereotypes.

I remember, when Pocahontas was announced, going to the computer and looking the story up on Encarta94 to see what it was all about. Wow, now it's hard to even remember to time before the internet.

Best 2D Disney Movie Ever: The Emperor's New Groove.

Hopefully maybe Disney will lay off making mediocre 3D movies and let Pixar handle that front, and will focus on making some good 2D movies again. Not like they're ever going to run out of Public Domain Fairy Tales to rip off....

Damn, I really wish Congress would stop being a bunch of push overs and stop extending copyright to protect Mickey. Disney needs a little taste of their own medicine.

Well, it looks like it has promise....

Though I think they need to change that title sequence. Rather than "after 75 years of magic" it should probably read "after 50-ish years of magic and about 25 of stringing you along".

I'm glad to see them return to 2D animation, but the story doesn't look that interesting to me. An entire movie about two frogs? I know the Lion King didn't have any people in it, but even on the surface the Lion King offered more depth than The Princess and the Frog.

I guess we won't know much more about it for many months, but I'm skeptical for now. The creative directors from the 90s animation studios are long gone so there's no real reason to believe this will be up to par.

I think the movie will get a lot of people who grew up seeing the original movies and then a lot of parents bringing their kids... I really hope they know they have to make this movie awesome

I still agree with AlexanderDitto's statement: Disney may own Pixar, but I still differentiate them. Disney should let their Pixar division handle the 3D, CGI movies, and Disney proper should focus on the 2d animated movies again.

I probably won't go see this in theaters, because I rarely do that unless someone else offers a ticket - but if I'm with my friends and we want to see a movie, I definitely would see this. But I will eventually see this.

I have been complaining for a long while about how all Western Animation is CGI now. I've actually been trying to figure out when the last traditionally western animated movie was in theatres - my current guess is 2001.

As for the 2D credits, I personally thought the opening to Monsters, Inc was pretty cool.

Exactly. Lyinginbedmon, just because a company is owned by another doesn't make them the same company, nor does it mean their outlooks or ways of doing business are the same. I'm not stupid; I know Pixar is owned by Disney. Yet Disney has decided to try it's hand at making its own 3D animated films.

Home on the Range? Chicken Little? Meet the Robinsons? Bolt? Any of those ring a bell? If they don't, it's because they were flops (except for Bolt, maybe? I heard it wasn't bad...).

Call me crazy, but Sleeping Beauty is still my favorite Disney movie; a lot of my favorite Disney animated movies are the old ones (ie: the movies that came out before I was born): Cinderella, Sword in the Stone, Robin Hood... Of the newer ones I definitely think Emperor's New Groove is under-rated, but it still ranks lower than Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King, for me.
