M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender
I saw this a few minutes ago and was wowed by it: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/exclu ... last/51239
It seems he got that specific aesthetic that's reminiscent of the show. I'll be super cautious about this one, as M. Night's last few films weren't exactly great in the least. The casting looks pretty solid, given that half of them are new faces and others I've seen in minor, but good roles. Again, I'm going to be super cautious about it.

Hmm...looks good and sorta faithful, but I kinda have the inkling that it'll end up being "Dragonball Evolution" good and sorta faithful.

Some think he's the chosen one?... he's the fricking Avatar, of course he's the chosen one!

Re: M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender
As I recall, there was a lot of disbelief early on in the series because there hadn't been an Avatar for 100 years, because Aang was frozen in the ice.
Consequently, people were a little dubious of a boy seemingly 12 years old actually being the Avatar.

I think he might need to be practicing something a little more battle-capable than blowing out some candles while the entire Fire Nation fleet is outside his goddamn temple door.

Re: M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender
I do so hope that the casting was done with gymnastic ability as well as acting prowess in mind. To give an example, the Watchmen movie. Would it have been as good had the actors not been able to pull off the same martial arts stunts as the comic book characters? Imagine if the woman who played the invisible woman, not athletic, played the Silk Specter, very athletic. It would have sucked.
My point being the Avatar series has a shitton of amazing partial arts and crazy flexible and athletic people. They are the core of what makes that show entertaining. If they are not replicated accurately, it will be terrible.

I never watched the show and don't really know much about it, but who cares.
Aasif Mandvi is in it and that makes me LOL.

Re: M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender
I just skimmed your post about the specific aesthetic shamamalaman was going for. The ad that plays before is for tapout and has two shirtless guys fighting to violin music. It isn't entirely apparent it's an octagon fight at the beginning. Then one of them flies his crotch into the other fellow's mouth in the the most homoerotic take down I've ever seen.
I'd tap out too.
I hope that's not what the aesthetic of Avatar will be.

The kid playing Aang has won karate tournaments, and Dev Patel apparently has some martial arts experience, too.
I would have still rathered Dante Basco playing Zuko, though.

Re: M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender
From the bits and pieces I've seen of Avatar, I've gotten the impression that it's anime in spirit, but not in art-style. Is this accurate?
I guess I should just look it up on wikipedia.

Have there been any good Live Action Anime Adaptations?

Re: M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender
I'm just a little confused why, of all people, its SHYAMALAN who is doing this movie.
I love Avatar, and the trailer seemed decent and not in the "they showed us the best clips of the movie so there is no point in watching it" kind of way. But Avatar always seemed a relatively upbeat, happy, anime to me(most of the time), and I was under the impression Shyamalan did...darker horror type movies.
I wait patiently for it though.

It got a lot darker nearer the end of the series, almost progressively so across all three seasons.

I noticed that, but I really had only watched the first season. I want to finish it all but I'm dealing with Clamp's stuff atm.
However, we established this takes place at the BEGINNING of the series as:
So unless the movie somehow manages to fit 3 seasons into movie, I'm going to still go with a slight level of confusion.

Re: M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender
I always thought it was funny that a show being broadcast on Nickelodean (and not even that TeenNick shit) decided to have a huge, century-spanning war as its central backdrop. Especially the episodes when they show snippets of actual battles, because the amount of nonviolence is staggering.
I remember in the episode "Day of the Black Sun" (Yeah, I liked the show, what of it?), at one point Sokka and Katara's father rushes into an encampment of Fire Nation soldiers and tries to incapacitate them all. The window of the room lights up and you hear him scream out in pain. Then he hobbles out of the building, holding his side. When he moves his arm, the wound is...A small rip on his coat. The ruination of his finely tailored clothing put him out of commission for the rest of the battle. Hilarious.

Re: M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender
Well I particularily enjoyed Avatar, I thought that it was well written and had a good balance of both comedy and actual story. I think it would make for a great movie, assuming it is followed reasonably well.
I think the candle built is more a meditative warm up. Just like you don't go all out before an actual competition, you do what you feel is necessary to prepare yourself.
So feelings? I think I'm going with Hopefully Optimistic.

That many candles could also serve as a test of precision application of force, putting out the candles in a specific area or putting out a single candle amidst many, etc.

Simply put. I cannot wait.
I love Avatar, Appa's Lost Days episodes totally broke me down. A childern's program has never made me cry but at that time my dog recently died and I was missing her something shocking.
If the movie is anything like the cartoon in terms of script and action I will love it too bits as well.
