If your friends are anything like you, Kate, I'll be guessing there will be a very fashionable and insane group of people dressed like candy canes.

I still find it funny that my old job at the local outlet mall thought that we would be swamped for Canada Day traffic. By the way, I live in Northeast PENNSYLVANIA, and the closest crossing to Canada is the other side of the state in Erie or through upstate New York. Clearly, the office at my old job was smoking fiberglass and cocaine.

Technically she's referred as the Queen of Canada when she's fulfilling her constitutional duties to Canada. And no, the UK does not own Canada in any sense of the word. Trudeau's Constitution Act 1982 and the UK's Canada Act, 1982 absolved the UK of any responsibilities and allows Canada to make it's own choices.

Yay Canada Day! I'll be celebrating it on a private island in the middle of the Caribbean with about twenty other Canadians.

Indeed, the Queen happens to be monarch of several countries. Though, admittedly that was considered a sign of British dominance at one point in time, now it seems to be more a shared cultural thing.

As with most Americans, I'll be spending my 4th of July participating in the most American of chemical reactions: explosions.

Actually she still does have a degree of power over us Canadians...remember not that long ago when Michaëlle Jean was the most powerful person in the country because she is the Govenor General (aka the Queen's representative)?

Yes, but that's the Governor General (who should be eliminated), the Queen herself actually does not have that power as far as I know. Not to mention that the Governor General is Canadian citizen and appointed by the Prime Minister (IIRC, its being that way ever since the King-Byng affair in the 20's).

... And did exactly what Steve told her to?

(Admittedly, what the opposition was trying to do was incredibly stupid).

Actually they are appointed by the Queen after recommendation by the Prime Minister...although it is nothing more than a formality, and one could argue that it is the Prime Minister who does the appointing.

Why should we ditch the Governor General?

Being on a road trip from New Jersey (east coast USA) to Alaska, I will actually pass out of Yukon into Alaska the day before the celebrations.

While it sucks I won't get to celebrate, there will also be way less drunken revelry on the road and in the campgrounds.

We should throw a forum party for Canada Day. Maybe using the Mibbet client?

In honour of Canadian Day, I challenge you all to take the Canadian Icons Quiz!!

I got 7/10 on my first try. Can you beat me?

Edit: There's also this one but it's quite a bit harder, especially for non-Canadians. Took me about 5 tries to get through it.

Actually Tim Eaton was one of the ones I got right. I missed Pierre Burton, Tommy Smallwood and Mackenzie-King (which I shouldn't have gotten wrong).

We don't have Canada Day in America but I still celebrate it Canadian friends with lots of booze and really bad dancing at a semi-decent club.

Just got home from the festivities. Went to a pre-party, went to Mount Tolmie to watch the fireworks, went to a different party afterwards.

Now I'm somewhat drunk and hanging out, getting ready for bedtimes.
