The 4th itself will go by unnoticed for me. Though, I think my family might have a BBQ on Sunday, so that'll make up for it.

I am gonna work! woot, well really I'll only work for 2 hours but I will be asleep for most of the 4th of July, so that I might go to work. I think however despite the politics any "x's day" is worth celebrating as is it is celebrating humans living, and human life rocks!

Meh, if we'd wiped them out we'd have just had to pay more to resettle the place.

This way we get none of the blame for their political idiocy and pay none of the costs to get their exports. Pretty much win-win, except that we get constantly associated with them for the "special relationship".

It is actually a physical law of the Universe that Britain must always spite the French. If they don't, the Universe will implode upon itself.

Well, being as British as Graham, you may find it surprising that I'm going to do a little more on the 4th than I did on the 1st (we visited the folks at their summer place and watched the township fire off some pyrotechnics), seeing as My Better Half™ is from Iowa.

We'll prolly BBQ some burgers and then I get to set off a couple of fireworks of our own. If that fizzles¹, then we have a packet of three-foot sparklers.

C'mon, would I be ME if I didn't?
1. my last foray into that didn't do so great - college new year's party, we had a REALLY old 'pinwheel' that we nailed to a fencepost, lit it, it simply went "sssssssSSSSSS BANG...BANG" and left the back yard full of dense smoke. :|

Well I'm grillin' today. Got burgers, hot dogs, bratwurst, and shrimp. Then we've got shit to blow up.
Here's hoping the Ass-ripper doesn't disappoint. After all, it did cost about 200$! (Granted though, my brother is the one who payed for it. He he, douche.)

Yes, of course. How could you celebrate a statutory holiday without fireworks?

Really, doesn't one just lead to the other? I mean, I can't count the number of parties I've been to that started off with tequila contests and ended up with a group of us trying to find a place that sells shovels and quicklime at 4 AM.

Yes. Yes. Yes. And, yes, but only if the first three get out of hand.

I will try to describe the Ass-ripper for TheRocketSiobhan.
It was just a loud-ass BLA-DOW!!!

I looked it up in my guide to fireworks, and apparently that's what it's supposed to do. It's a firework that creates an explosion with such force, that there is a shockwave. And if you stand too close to the launch point, (Which is like 20 feet.) you might get knocked down, and possibly deafened. Which is why I'm glad it came with a long-ass fuse.

I was expecting all kinds of pretty stuff, not a POW that sends you into cardiac arrest!

So it didn't disappoint?

Well as for me, we went to the party at 5pm (and by we I mean my parents and I) where I consumed:

2 bottles Sam Adams Summer Ale
1 bottle Yards Pugilist
4 Beef Kebabs
3 Shrimp Kebabs
Half a plate of almond pinaple rice
3 double marshmallow smores
1 Double Kahlua and Cream (with heavy cream)
2 bottles of water

and upon reaching the hotel at ll:30 pm, took two ibuprofen and played 90 minutes worth of Professor Layton.

I'd call it a success.

The war of 1812 is one of those fun internet topics that spew all over the place once they're brought up... There was already the semantics forum a while back about the whole 'were they british or canadian' thing. That wasn't my point though: America lost 1812. They got a reprieve. But the real spirit of the American people was in how they faced that, and that's in the song. Go America! You have a history of nobility and bravery against all odds. You may have the odds on side now, but if you can remember that spirit when the cards are in your favor, then that 'leader of the free world' thing you like to say about yourselves might get echoed by the rest of the free world.

Well, I won't dispute anything you said in interest of not derailing the thread further, but, at least in my case, I did learn the history behind the Star Spangled Banner.

In music class, no less.

Sometimes, in US schools, you learn better history in the non-history classes. :shakes head:

Very true. Canadian history and social studies in highschool is five years learning about Louis Riel (Real? Hell I don't remember, he was a boring metis that got his silly head killed).

Don't you just love how Canadians know more about US history than we do sometimes? Just more proof that the US Public Education System is fucked.

And I graduated from a top school district in my state, and I say that.

I guess its marginally "improved" out here. We get an entire year dedicated to China (minus the last 30-40 years), and another year on the French and Industrial revolutions (the sadly lacking "modern history" course, which deals with things neither modern nor historical. Watched several movies though).
