Free EEPC
So phunny story, upon receiving an email saying that I had received a package I went down to the mail room to pick it up. So to preface this, no one knows where I live so the fact that I had a package was weird. The fact that I had one from New Computers Inc. was even weirder. So I get to my room and open it up and find an EEPC inside. Now I'm really confused. Also inside is an external drive that has a note on it. From it I infer that someone sent this computer in and the HDD has the recovered data. Curiously, it uses my name. In fact, my name is all over the package. So I plug in the drive to see if I can figure anything out. From one .doc file I figure out that the person the drive is entitled to has my first name as his middle name and we share last names. And apparently he goes by his middle name. Weird, cause it sucks. Anyway, I look at the package again, turns out it has 2 addresses on it. One is addressed directly to my room, the other to a room on the opposite side of campus. So, I've given it to one of the dude's roommates and my working theory is that the university intervened and decided that the company didn't know where they wanted to send it. Yay.
Also, while I have at least some moral scruples apparently my sister doesn't, as she suggested multiple times to just keep it.
What's your opinion?

Giving up a laptop for the sake of morals? I would have kept it!
Okay, not really, you did the right thing, as I would have done (if it was one of the older models, that is!)(We need sarcastic font)

Re: Free EEPC
I would give it to the person it is intended for... because it would suck to be that person
however, if I didn't know who it belonged to or couldn't figure it out, I might have kept it....

Re: Free EEPC
Not knowing who to give it to was never an option. I had the number of the company on the package. Also, at some point they probably would've found me if I had kept it.
That is important.
I don't really regret not getting a free EEPC. I regret not getting a mouse that doesn't suck complete balls.

Did you at least check for porn to copy off of it?

I would have done the same thing. Though, I prolly wouldn't have entrusted it to his room mates.

Re: Free EEPC
One, I didn't copy pr0n off it, although I did find quite a lot of jpgs of it as I was looking for any sort of identifying information. They were all like 100x150 for some reason.
Two, I had class like 30 minutes after I set off. My epic quest took roughly an hour as I went to 3 separate quads on the opposite side of campus to get there. And I say epic for a reason, I actually ventured through some woods.
Also, it technically wasn't his roommate so much as his suitemate, but I still don't care that much.

I applaud you for doing the right thing. I'd have done the same since it would be awful if I were on the losing side, so I try to follow the Golden Rule.
Now, you could also have done this:
In a related note: NEVER save personal pr0n in your office computer, because IT WILL find it,copy it and probably put it online... :3

and by personal pr0n, do you mean pictures of yourself? Why in the world would anyone leave that on a computer at work? Why would it be on the computer at work in the first place?

Re: Free EEPC
The majority of my porn is already available online (well, unless rapidshare has taken it down by now, but I'm more than willing to re-upload it), so I don't really care about people finding/copying it. I still wouldn't leave it on a work computer though. That's just stupid (and gives them a reason to fire you).
Then again, there's all those people who leave porn on school computers, too....

Re: Free EEPC
If the dude sent it away to get recovered, it obviously means enough to him to bother. I personally consider my computer like a 4th arm. the third arm being my penis and penis-related senses. Stealing someones arms isn't cool.

lol XD yeah, Pennywise started doing some tech support and fell into the IT department of a software company, since 4chan started, kids aren't so easily scared.

People think that whatever is in their computers is personal and no one will ever see it, but they always forget that sooner or later they will have to bring the computer to IT to get it fixed.
I really have no idea, but this happens, A LOT.
Story time: A few years ago I was working in the IT department of a callcenter and I had to do remote scanning of the network computers, I saw one that had a few trojans and started looking for the infected files, then I saw naked pictures of the owner of the computer which had been taken at the office's bathroom. Apparently, he had been taking those pictures and sending them to his boyfriend and his boyfriend was doing the same... so yeah, that guy got fired really quickly.

Re: Free EEPC
The kind of person who is surfing porn at work is FAR more likely to have to take their computer to IT than you are.

Re: Free EEPC
Not to mention if you had kept it, the person who the computer was for could have called the company who sent it to wonder why it wasn't there, and then go to the mail room to see why he never got a notice about it, and if your mail room is like mine, you would have had to sign for it, and your name and address would have been on the slip, and then he could have tracked you down.
Plus it might be illegal.
You know, I've never found porn on a school or work computer. Did find it on a home computer and got creeped out for a good long while. It's all well and good when nameless people are saving porn on a computer, it's different when it's someone in your family.

Re: Free EEPC
You did the right thing, no doubt.
I once got a free Wii. I had ordered a DS and received a far too big, far too heavy package. Inside it were the ordered DS and Wii.
I sent three emails to the company, who answered with probably pre-written statements, TOTALLY IGNORING that I had some of their property.
Well, I read some law-stuff on the web, which said that I'm not responsible if people mail me shit without asking for money, I waited a month and then sold the Wii for cheap.

I probably would have dicked around on it a bit, set some tasteless desktop images, installed Vista on it, that sort of thing. But then I would have given it to him.
