This is definitely true. I've heard F-bombs for every part of speech.

All in the same sentence.

Must have caps locked the sentence.

Does that mean he was being sarcastic?

I want to know why "crap" isn't a curse word (for most people) but "shit" is. They are both four letter words for fecal matter. What's the difference?

my job duties require that I have the caps lock on for most of the day, and if I forget to take it off, you get CAPS-MATT.

most of the time I'll delete it and re-write it if I notice, other times I'm too lazy. Or it's funny to leave it.

So, you work in an office, a lot of the people there are women, and you use a lot of caps.

Are you a professional internet troll?

I honestly don't know why, but I grew up on the notion that "crap", "dang", "darn", "heck", "butt", and, to a lesser degree, "screw" were okay.

yes.

no, I use caps, because much of my job currently involves making notes in the subject lines of emails and sorting them into the appropriate folder.

I use caps so the notes are clearly distinguished from the subject lines.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/crap%5B2%5D

"Crap" originally meant 'residue from rendered fat', while "shit" always meant...um, yeah.

Crap is often used to denote 'junk' or 'garbage' or even just 'unwanted things or stuff':

"We can renovate this abandoned building as soon as we get all that crap out of the rooms."

"*beep* Um, honey? Yeah, I saw you fondling that girl at the dance club last night. That's it; we're through. You'd better stop by my apartment to get your crap before I pitch it out into the street."

AND it can also mean 'feces'. "Excuse me, I gotta go take a crap."

Whereas 'shit' IS often used to refer to....yeah. I know; surprising, isn't it? (regardless of Mr.Carlin's amusing assertion)

In addition, 'shit' is also often used to refer to 'stuff':
"C'mon, let's hit the beach!"
"Just a sec, I gotta get my shit."

Now as to WHY the former is considered 'fine' while the latter isn't, I can't say anything more than "because we all reach an unconscious consensus that they are to be considered like that. *shrug*

For the record, I don't consider either to be a 'curse word' until they're used as expletives.

"Honey? I'm pregnant."
"SHIT!"

"Joanie? We're gonna have to lay you off."
"Aw, crap!"

Then, either of them qualifies when used thusly. I may consider 'shit' to be more severe than 'crap' in non-cursing statement use, but...

In the words of Penn Jillette, "These people don't care about the package, just the gift wrap."
War is hell.
Hell is other people.
Therefore, War is other people.

I'm surprised nobody's posted the Monty Python sketch yet. I can't remember the name of it to find it but I'm sure someone knows which one.

It was one explaining the different uses of the word "fuck" and how it can be used in almost every word in a sentence. "Fuck the fucking fuckers!"

I highly doubt that was Monty Python if you're refferring to what I think.

Remember that at the time Mary Whitehouse was culturally relevant and a pretty formidable moral crusader; Life of Brian was widely banned for depicting Jesus. How do you think they'd get away with a sketch concering the word "fuck"?

It shouldn't be a question if the videos have profanity.

I like how this thread turned out.

I was reffering to the very specifec case of f*ck and sh*t. The seem pointless. Relics from other forums I guess.

I myself find figuring out more creative profanity enjoyable as well, but the difference between donkey raping shit eater and shithead to be mostly a matter of time available.

Yeah, but "ass-molesting spunk bubbler" just rolls off the tongue so much more smoothly.

I'm surprised I haven't contributed to this!

When I was younger, I was vehemently against swearing. It just seemed so... pedestrian. There are much more colorful, interesting ways of expressing anger/outrage/confusion/pain, and I'd rather hear them. I never used to swear.

Now that I'm older, I fear I've been exposed to so much swearing that it's easy for me to slip into it myself. I don't care for it, though I do see that there's merit to swear words when they're used sparingly, as if not overused, they're very powerful. I don't like when they're overused, though. They just become dilute, and then the swearing goes from being forceful to annoying, offensive, or stupid, depending on who's speaking.

I also approve of swearing when it comes from an unexpected source, as has been covered in the thread. I really still do prefer interesting swears, instead of the mundane ones we all know. One of the many reasons why I love Stephen Fry's twitter feed. You get some really interesting epithets....

Also this is relevant: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_osQvkeNRM

I also really hate having to read or quote something that has a lot of swear words in it. It's just... it highlights how unusual it is for me to swear, and makes me sound awkward.

Good, because Monty Python's Flying Circus didn't HAVE profanity, typically. Cleese may have been "the very first person ever to say 'shit' on British television" (per his eulogy of Graham Chapman - I can't remember the sketch off-hand), but that would have been the exception, not the rule. Nudity? Sure. Gratuitous gore and violence? Yep, but not much worse than "You vacuous, toffee-nosed, malodorous pervert!" for foul language.

I consider "goddammit" a prayer. Hey god! Damn that for me.

I don't know what the big hangup is about the word "cunt." As far as profanity goes, "Cunt" = Woman & "Cock" or "Dick" = Man.

Anyway, as far as "fuck" goes, we all know it's just the Felonious Use of Carnal Knowledge.
