Desert Bus Tech Test

Postby treklover » 13 Nov 2009, 18:25

I have been waiting for the tech test to start for about half an hour now, and there is still nothing on desertbus.org that links to a video or chat. Is it just me or am I missing something? Help?

Graham's being delayed so they haven't started the test yet. If you want you can go directly to the ustream page ( http://www.ustream.tv/channel/desert-bus-drivercam ) and join a few of us in the chat, and you'll see them as soon as they start broadcasting.

For those of you that missed the tech test, Graham found the freeze frame functionality in the last 15 minutes or so. They had some fun with it.

Alex has set up so much cool stuff that this year really is going to be bigger and better than ever.

I forgot to nab the BUS OVERLAY but I did get these when the inexplicable "zoomfreeze" thing was happening to the cam:

Alex had a slave Wii remote setup to operate stuff too. Also seen him do same with a DS before.

I actually saw a bit of when Alex was making those overlays, as I passed through his site and saw him using his feed to test them. They look sweet. Knowing Alex, its only a matter of time before something fails epicly though.

I wonder how Alex is going to do AAAL with his laptop hooked up to the DB feed.....

I wish I could have been there tonite! Instead, I went for a motorcycle ride. Chilly! Picked up some Taco Bell on the way home & baffled the guy at the drive-through. I'll be able to watch video again after the 17th.

Thanks for the screencaps.

So here is what you missed at the tech test:
(Spoilers?)

- This year's driver cam is a TRI-ANGLE festival of fun.
- There is a overlay of the time and donations (which we can break if we go over one million), as well as various news bits.
- Alex is an evil genius, as shown by making the camera and overlay controls run completely by WIIMOTE, as well as creating an overlay of the Desert Bus Dashboard.
- James' fabled fail-puter has failed for the final time.
- Chemistring sent Paul a box of prizes that was too big to take on the bus.
- The guest list this year is massive.
- The chat will be on a 42" TV for them this year.
- The main drivercam is located in the set of ENN.

Also, it takes 4 computers just to run this year's Desert Bus. One is to archive the entire thing, Alex's laptop runs the drivercam and all the associated coolness, another laptop runs the chat, and the fourth is for the...buscam?

The wiimote can do a ton of cool stuff, and having the buttons control things is actually the easiest thing to do (I've done it before). The wiimote functions as a standard bluetooth device, and there's scripting programs and documentation out there on how to map the buttons to keys. I once set up my wiimote as a controller for Freelancer, using the accelerometer for mouse movement, and the buttons to control thrust, firing, and weapon grouping. Anything you can do with a mouse+keyboard you can do with a wiimote, and a shitload more.

I agree... I would buy one if they were actually going down in cost at all... which they aren't. It's kind of absurd.

I call shenanigans on the bolded one. I know, because I had to take the box on the bus to get it to the post office.

Beyond that, the tech test just left me more stoked than ever for next weekend (and on into the week. And maybe the following weekend...?)

Well, Paul said it was too big to go on the bus. Maybe the busses in Vic have different rules on how big boxes can be than Calgary?
