MMMMM Assassin's Creed 2

Postby zfubarz » 17 Nov 2009, 01:48

Ok so quickie review (it's almost 5 in the morning so that tells you something.)

first and foremost, the game is actually really unpolished, like weird clipping things and strange cutscene problems like characters moving around in weird places, it's also not really all that graphically impressive, Yeah its pretty, but only a bit more than the first game, there are however at least 5x's the number of people on the screen at anyone time, so that sorta makes up for it. That is about my only complaint though.

Gameplay is fun as hell, the new animations are great, different from the last game, makes it feels like a much different person, I've only encountered 1 or 2 instances where it didn't do exactly what i wanted, and that's more likely my fault for going in the wrong direction. The new mission types so far play to the games strengths much better. Nothing that involves following 40 people around for no reason.

The whole cover system works much better now too, you don't jsut have to find random groups of monks walking around everywhere and hope for the best, any crowd is enough for you to try and blend in, the hiring of various factions is cool too, but I've just gained that ability recently.

Fighting so far is fun, I've seen a couple animations a few times too many, but then i was just walking around in street clothes and such at the time so the game had barely started, I'm gonna guess with all the new combo's and weapons available the variety of moves for each will suffer a bit, but they're so fluid and well done you'll probably barely notice.

If you hated the first game this is more of the same, so maybe not your thing, but it's better more varied, and has a lot more whores, which is always nice

Best thing they changed? so far no stupid beggar whores running up and begging for money ruining your approach.
Worst thing they didn't? well you still gotta watch that panoramic view each time you find a leap of faith point.

There was not one time in the first game that a beggar walked up to me that I didn't assassinate them.

I have it pre-ordered as part of an extra credit deal, but I'll probably just wait until it's cheap to actually buy it.

Also wagons of rose petals and rivers now as well, ahh the wonders of animus 2.0

I can't imagine aging this game without a controller, hell I can barely think of playing with a ps3 controller, it's so smooth and perfect with the 360 controller.

Edit: Matt if you don't want your preorder mal code I'll tale it. ;)

I'm enjoying it. I agree about the clipping issues, and I don't mind the panoramic.

I love swimming, when you grab someone you can actually beat them up/slit their throat, and climbing feels smoother (plus Ezio is really graceful).

I also like how much the characters in Lineage look like their animated counterparts. It makes it feel smoother.

Also, I totally called the prequel bit before you enter the Animus again.
I can put my hands in my head, and I can laugh it in the face.

sonuvva.

so i've been playing for a fair few hours, and i'm still not sure what to think. like zfubarz said in the OP, it's quite unpolished. quite a few of the niggling control issues from the first one have leaked through without so much as a look over, guards seem to still have x-ray vision and a 6th sense, and my main concern is you seem to have to be way closer to target an enemy, which makes throwing knives essentially useless. my only other complaint is the lack of tutorials at the start, and then the addition of useless ones to practice skills you've already been forced to work out by yourself beforehand. this is going to be extremely annoying for anyone who hasn't played AC before (which i have, but damned if i can remember the controls straight away). oh yeah, no annoying beggars, but now we have annoying bards. on the plus side, they get pretty emo when you punch them. the game itself is pretty fun, but i'm a bit torn. it's very, very samey to the first one. sure it's less linear and the locations are different, but i feel like i can get through this game with just the 'counter' move again. still, early days, and the hammer things are awesome. :D

yeah I hadn't seen the bards at the time of the first post, but this time they're kinda funny, and you can just toss some change on the ground anyways.

I figured the throwing the knife problem would be because of the hidden gun you eventually get.

quite probably, but it's frustrating to be seen just before you kill someone almost EVERY time. i'm having some severe frustrations in this game. so much like the first one. i.e. you're in a great free run and jump off a roof only to find there's nothing but street (or guards) under you and you lose half your health. i did that three times in two minutes last night. it didn't bother me so much in AC because you could regen health. not that medicine is expensive, it's just annoying to keep your stocks up. i'm really not too keen on how dan brown the puzzles have gotten either, though the unlocks from glyphs are truly intriguing. also, how rad is it that you can dye your robes? :D
red hood ftw! by the way, for anyone who hasn't played it, i'm only wiritng down negative things because the positives would take a lot longer. it really is a great game and i'd recommend you get it if you liked the first one. a few kinks SHOULD have been ironed out before release, but it seems this is the trend these days.

Tbh, I'm a huge Kristen Bell fan and will buy it solely to see her performance with the game play and story (as amazing as it may be) playing second to my undying love for her.
