Dear New Users,
I couldn't really think of the right place to put this. I could put it in the welcome thread, but it would quickly be pushed off the last page by all the new users, and no one back reads in that thread. I was going to put it in the other welcome thread, but it has already become deliciously derailed from its original purpose, as threads are want to do here. So instead I have started a new thread.
Dearest New Users,
Greetings and Salutations! Welcome to the forums! I'm happy to see so many of you, and we hope you'll stay for a while. We're a lively bunch.
That said, I've already seen a few kurfuffles pop up in various threads, a few misunderstandings, caused by what seems to be an easily correctable misconception.
The most important thing to remember is: this forum does not take itself seriously. At all. I feel like this is important for people to remember. If someone says something exceptionally outrageous, or stupid, or somewhat offensive, or seems to be exceptionally indignant about something, chances are they're either being sarcastic, facetious, or jocular, or perhaps two of these (but never all three at once. What are we, barbarians?).
The exception, of course, is in threads where things take a serious slant. I think you'll be able to detect these outright.
If you can get used to that, we're a fun lot, I think you'll find.
Also, it's LRR. Always LRR. The second 'R' shall never be turned to an 'L', for the name that is formed results in ruinous consequences, an acronym that must never be uttered, nor typed, for fear of summoning from the mirror-world the evil, goatee'd dopplegangers of LRR, who will steal your eyes and tongue away. That way madness lies.
Also also, I must warn you, Morgan is the WORST homosexual.
Anyone else have any suggestions for new members? Let's do some navel-gazing! What are our forum quirks?

Lavos is Lavos.
Think about what you are posting. If you can not add something constructive or funny do not add anything.
Also try to use correct spelling, grammar and punctuation.

We are all made of star dust. However we are also made of nuclear waste.
Remember to think before you post.

Part of me hoped when opened this thread it would say:
Dear New Users,
Go back to where you came from.
I would have lol'd.

Also regarding the newbs: PROPER USE OF THE COLON AND SEMICOLON ARE ALSO REQUIRED ON THIS FORUM; ONE MIGHT SAY THAT THEY ARE MANDATORY AND ALL VIOLATORS ARE SUBJECT TO TASERING.

Re: Dear New Users,
But... you just...double colon....is that allowed?
My face!
Also, honestly, expect something to get derailed. Derail it yourself if you want. Honestly, no one REALLY cares.
Also never invoke Godwin's law, please.

Re: Dear New Users,
No, I used a semicolon. It was kind of hard to work in there, so I'm sorry if it's a little awkward.

A few useful bits of information: Alja is a time-traveling demi-god who's greatest wish is to be trebucheted into the Pacific Ocean, I am a career bureaucrat for the powers-that-be with a zeppelin-type airship (NOT to be confused with a blimp), and Lyinginbedmon and Elomin Sha have being known to engage in the odd post war, although that has died off as of late.

Curse my poor nerdy eyes!
At least I haven't screwed up the use of an apostrophe yet today.

Re: Dear New Users,
I am a huge fan of the Oxford comma. It clarifies, elucidates, and reduces fine lines and wrinkles.
Every time someone calls me dapper, I blush and sputter with delight. It absolutely makes my day, so thank you metcarfre.
I thought of another one: Necromancy of old threads is generally frowned upon, unless you have a really good reason to do it.
Also, use the blasted Youtube sticky. USE IT.
I think the facetious capslock thing has become an internet truism now, hasn't it? Dinosaur Comics has well established it as the norm...

To all ya'll that are worried about "punctuation" and "semi-colons" and full-on colons and yadda yadda yadda, this is one of the areas where you don't need to panic about the theoretically inevitable influx from The Escapist. Over there brand new members will be swarmed by more "senior" members (and by "senior" I mean people with post counts at least six posts higher and with a sense of entitlement) in something resembling a lynch mobbing if they make some kind of errors.
It's almost like there's some kind of "Grammar Gestapo"... not that I would know anything about that...
*slowly takes off armband and hides it behind back*
Anyway, I'm already liking it over here on this side of the interwebs. Less pointless yellin- er, "discussion" about why your beliefs are stupid and more, you know, funny. At this rate if you guys get sick of me you may have a very hard time getting rid of me.
Thanks for the welcome and the hollow threats. It's touching.

For best results, someplace ironic.

You know, I was hoping that all of the sarcasm, snide comments and self-depreciating humor would have been enough to hint that maybe I wasn't taking any of this seriously. Like any of it. At all.
Good job picking up on that, by the way. Very skillful.

Re: Dear New Users,
Dear Newest Forumers,
All of the above are fully and completely true. One of the reasons most of us like the community here is because we are an almost completely self policing forum of intellgently silly people. When we get into major debates about religion, politics, and so on, things tend to be more prone to going cockup, so we make it our biggest rule to PLAY NICE. If you disagree with someone's viewpoint, tell them your side. Even the crotchety Ol' Man Allen! and ornery Uncle Cake have soft spots. As I heard on some tv show, "below that hard, crusty shell... is another hard, crusty shell, but inside of that is mush."
Also, Lavos is Lavos, and it is best to not feed him afer midnight and keep all your soiled panty dispensers away from him, as he has figured out how to get them out for free.

I feel somewhat obliged to alert people to Alja...he can come off as a bit disturbing the first time around.
Just respect that, much like the Lavos, he really can't be comprehended. His world is complex.
