Back when I was your age...
Re: Back when I was your age...
I remember back in the day, kids didn't have cell phones. Our options were "don't get lost," and "be back before the street lights turn on."
I was texting my little sister today. She's 12. She's had a cell phone since she was 9.

Re: Back when I was your age...
I've only had a phone for a brief period, and got rid of it since I never used it. I have no need to be in constant contact with everything and everyone, and if I need to contact someone, I'll find a landline (or boot up my laptop.......but still). I enjoy today's technology (and being in computer science, arguably depend on it), but I have a firm understanding and respect of the times when we weren't so fortunate.
Also, I have hiked several miles, through the snow, in the middle of January, to get home from school. So at least when I tell my kids that story, it will be true.

Re: Back when I was your age...
I only got a cell phone once I could pay for it! Kids should NOT have cell phones.
My sister, 14, does not, and will not have one. Neither will my younger brothers. I refuse to let my parents fall into that trap of letting children have phones. To give kids things like that only spoils them. Then they become amazed once they actually have to pay for their own and realize it costs a ton.
I stand by that for most things, computers, games, and such. My siblings get games on Christmas and Birthdays, no other time.
But yeah, I wouldn't be able to live without technology. I do NOT want to go back to a time where it wasn't there. My goodness. If I have to make something its just a second on my phone, if I need to go somewhere, GPS (Phone again) and practically anything else. No way would I want that gone.

Re: Back when I was your age...
It's funny how fast the standard of teens having cellphones changed in Vancouver. When my brother went to school, the only kids with mobiles were the drug dealers because they had the money for it. When I went to school every kid had one. I didn't because my parents are awesome like that. The only reason I have one now is that I need it for work, otherwise i'd be quite happy with a landline and a telephone book. Oh and for reference, my brother is five years older then me.
That being said, I fully appreciate the convience of a mobile phone.
As for other technology, I remember when using the internet to research for essays was encouraged, and now it's generally frowned upon to only use the internet for essays.
I also wasn't allowed a game system aside from a PC until about grade eight. My parents got me a bike and told me to go outside and explore. Which is the best childhood education you can get.

Remember when pagers were the hot new technology, & then one day you saw a kid in your class had one & you were all "Wooooooahh!"?

As one of my earliest posts dictates, I do yearn for an immensely simpler time made more difficult by the fact that I'd have to do everything for myself.
On the other hand, the first thing I do any time that I'm bored is go for my mobile.

I have a phone that I rarely use, it's an old hand me down from my Dad (his job demanded he get a blackberry and a different phone so I got his old one). I only really use it to make calls and I'm fine with that. However I may get a different one because the battery life is terrible (it seems to drain significantly during a 20 minute conversation). Now every phone has 65 different features on it. I've been toying with the idea of finding a phone that can only make calls, receive calls and take messages (and if I can't find that then I'll add store phone numbers to the list), and turning it into a stand up bit.
I hope I'm not the only one who's looked at the current state of gadgets and stuff and said 'isn't this excessive'? It's the feeling I get every time I go to sharper image.
Re: Back when I was your age...
For me, selecting a phone is a very easy process. All I do is ask, "Is it free?" If they answer is "yes" then it has met all my criteria.

My mobile has at least 40 features I rarely, if ever, use.
I have 1020 channels on my television that I pay for. I haven't watched television since May, but I refuse to get rid of the channels because the second I do I'll want to watch something.
I get at least one game a month.
90% of my communication is done by alphanumeric text.
Instead of putting on clothes, I crank the heat when I'm cold.
And my biggest fantasy involves me getting some basic supplies and leaving civilization behind. Go figure.

Re: Back when I was your age...
Back then when I was a kid (I still consider myself to be one, though, at the age of 18) mobiles were starting to be part of everyday life. My parents decided to give me and my sisters phones as birthday gifts on our 10th birthdays. Well, it worked with the two oldest of us but I remember how angry and jealous my older little sister was when the youngest of us got her mobile when she was 8.
I use my phone mainly to receive calls and send text messages 'bout 10 times a month, and that's easy to see from my bill.
I think I would be able to live without computer, mobiles, TV and everything like that if I was never introduced to them. Using those has just became a habit I think I will never be able to break. When I'm at my computer, I mainly stare at some dot at some site and wish I could have an old typewriter, so I wouldn't have an excuse to use computer when writing. To be fair I need to say that I would have propably done something fatal long time ago, since after starting to frequent the Internet I've had way more social contacts than before, even though I still do much nothing.
... I don't think I added anything useful to the conversation.

Re: Back when I was your age...
I can't imagine to live without computers, since the earliest 'use' was when I was 5 or 6 years old, playing Moon Patrol or Dung Beetles on my dad's Apple IIe, about 22 years ago.
Living without cell phones or the internet, sure that'd work. Don't know how we used to settle arguments like 'Who was that guy in movie A played by? -It was actor X. - No it was actor Y. -No X. -No Y. ...' but we'd figure out a way, I guess
But still I find myself being lured by technology. (and being into computer science, that's hopefully a good thing) I got my current cell phone because it was able to play mp3s and has 64MB storage which can be expanded by some weird Flash memory card that I'd never heard of before I got it and have never heard of ever since. Anyways, guess how often I've used that feature, and yet I want to get a new cell phone because of some 'cool' feature that I'd most likely never use.
edit: on a side note, the speech in Dung Beetles is pretty amazing considering the Apple IIe's sound abilities.

All suspects are guilty. Period! Otherwise they wouldn't be suspects, would they?
Re: Back when I was your age...
I wouldn't trade my computer for the world. Keeping in touch with people is made easier this way, but then again if I didn't have a computer I might have actually made an effort to meet people in person. Tricky question this.
The thing I do hate with new technology is the stress it implements on society. Everything is supposed to go super fast nowadays and as far as I see it humans aren't built to last in this tempo for long. I know I don't.

This is the problem. It's not specifically about computers, or the fact that technology has made everything faster and easier and connected the world... it's that people have taken that as a signal that the world MUST go faster, that you have to cram your day with productivity and everyone must be instantly connected with everyone else and if you're not, you're to be chastised and shunned.
People are alternately shocked and annoyed when I tell them I don't get text messages, as though I'm some affront to their productivity.
I have half a mind to just shut it all down, lock up all my stuff, buy a typewriter, move to a flat near a library and do nothing but write and read for a few years, disappear for a while. Oh, sure, there'd still be debit cards and whatnot, conveniences of modern technology, but I think the real thing we've lost is the ability to slow down.

I miss video game consoles that don't have a 53% failure rate.
I miss the weird socialist vibe that came with being a NES owner back in the 80's. You didn't own your games, the community owned them and you were constantly swapping games with kids you didn't even know.
I remember when cable boxes had a dial to change the channel, and there were numbers AND letters on it. I remember Nickelodeon was "Q".
Oh yeah, when I was your age you didn't need a passport to go to Canada...

I always thought the rugrats went downhill after the first movie, when they introduced Dill, although adding Kim was just pushing it.

What you mean back in the days where Titanic had the highest box office draw of any movie ever?
titanic was the penultimate example of a release pattern for prestige pictures in particular that no longer exists, it's initial first run release being nearly a year. Movies are no longer released in this pattern, which used to facilitate a slow build of both critical acclaim and word of mouth, and having peak earnings long after initial wide release (another rarity today). Titanic is still the highest box office, but box office draw is a title it never really had (it's highest weekend was about $37m US.) Coincidentially, it is nowhere near the biggest adjusted (domestic US) gross, with Gone With The Wind more than doubling it's $600 Mil.
On the bright side, it looks like New Moon is running into the ground like a comet, and failed to keep up the pace to fastest 200mil, so that's good.
Disclaimer: I do not consider Titanic to be a very good movie, nor do I consider box office to necessarily have anything to do with quality, I just prefer it when movies that are bringing in massive $$$$ have some discernible worth.

Re: Back when I was your age...
I remember being little and thinking the coolest way to keep in touch with my best friend (who lived down the street) was to write a letter, run down to her house, sneak to her mailbox, leave the letter there then ring the doorbell and make a mad-dash back to my house. Then wait 10 minutes for her to do the same.
Now my brother texts all his friends despite the fact that it takes him all of 5 minutes to walk down to their houses after calling to confirm they are, indeed, at home.
