Use it when you have two connected statements but you can't decide whether to separate them with a period or a comma. Notice that the semicolon is made up both of a period & a comma.

You use a semi-colon when two sentences are kind of connected, but not quite ready for a conjunction. It's the grammatical equivalent of living with your girlfriend for several years, but not being sure if you want to get married.

Use a semicolon when you link two independent clauses with no connecting words.

Ahh, touche Jim, Cake, and Yaxley; however, you have not mentioned it's use in lists or it's use in linking clauses with transitional phrases or conjunctive adverbs, or it's use in lists which involve commas as parts of listed items (i.e. "State Capitals: Bismarck, ND; Annapolis, MD; Albany, NY...). Or, of course, when people just know it's too much for a comma but not enough for a period.

Still no takers on the em dash? –come on–

Yes, but my post had the addition of a lame attempt at humor.

It was either that, or start quoting Vampire Weekend's song "Oxford Comma," and I decided not to go in that direction.

I was going to mention that, but I couldn't think of a relationship simile for it.

Time for Epocalypse to create a new forum account already. Most people wait until they've made 1,337 posts.

And in a very rare occurrence for the internet, a thread that could have turned into a grammar nazi war instead turn into the lulz.

Keep that in mind, new members. If someone gets mad at your for a grammar mistake, just commit ritual seppuku. Then we'll ALL have a laugh and no one will remember your mistake after a while. It's win-win!

N Dashes can be used for:

1) Range

M Dashes can be used for:

1) Emphasis in place of a comma
2) To set apart an independent clause that goes with the sentence but does not quite fit the flow of the sentence
3) To set apart a list in a sentence

However, if you are setting apart something it is best not to use a dash, especially in formal writing as it breaks apart the sentence.

I'm taking desperate notes, but I have a sinking feeling I'm going to fail the exam.

And Oxford Comma? Is that the kind of comma that excells at rowing and harbours a deep rivalry against the Cambridge Comma? We just got regular, working-class commas at my school.
It's just various people talking and sometimes they do things in brackets
