So, the world is ending...

Postby Cake » 14 Dec 2009, 06:08

and all the data centers are on their backup generators. We can run 3 days on our diesel generators alone. So let's say you have 3 days to grab what you need from the internet. What do you download in those three days to help you survive the apocalypse? You know, assuming we'd find someway to charge our lappys when needed.

Me? I say I go for Wikipedia. Everything else kinda just seems superfluous.

Two things:
First, every possible game I can think of.
Second, instructions on how to repair a broken monitor. Because, it might break. And then, it wouldn't be fair... I had time then.

Well, I'm downloading how to take over and fortify your local metropolitan center, and then how to convert major rivers to hydroelectric. Then I'd restart the internet one city at a time.

Also, cookbooks and hunting and farming guides.
Time flies when I launch grandfather clocks from my trebuchet.

I agree with arius on the fact that i'd download every good video game I can think of, since surviving the apocalypse might take a long time and you need something to keep yourself amused.
Beyond that, i'd try to find a way to download a real encyclopedia like Britannica instead of wikipedia, because while wikipedia is good and for the most part is accurate, we would need something more professional and "correct" when it comes time to rebuild society.

As many tech guides, handbooks and medical texts as I could. I'd like a matrix-like knowledge of how to work, restart and repair any piece of machinery or technology I may come across.

Knowing how to farm/care for livestock may also be a good thing.

/+1 to arius for the TZ reference

Honestly I wouldn't download anything I'd find my nearest bookstore and take up residence there. Seriously, X for Dummies how to guides I think are much more valuable. My opinion of course. There will be so many other activities you could and should be doing in the event of the apocylpse. Gaming would be pretty low on my priority list.

I'd forget about the internet and spend the time arranging for the LRR crew to come over here. Then I wouldn't need the internet.

I might not survive the apocalypse, but at least I'd be entertained.

In a post apocalypse scenario I don't think you'll have much time to play games, I think you'd be hunting for food with most of your time. Wild asparagus are really hard to catch.

But if the internet is going down, why wouldn't electricity too? I don't think many of us would have a lot of time to enjoy the data we download so I would download as much exclusive internet literature as I could. To print it off and preserve it.

Three days is such a small amount of time to download pr0n.

I would fly to an island and set up a new internet and world. I would, of coarse, get guns for defense and trade passing ships lolcats for ammo. And I would invite the greatest internet minds there, like LRR and the people at The Escapist. And the good people of the forums.

I'd like to point out that the internet is useless in the long run (long here being a week or so) especially if you live in a city due to the breakdown of food and water supplies once the power goes out completely.
