So if you're homeless you could pay nothing? Wait, then why would you have a car? Could have made a homeless mobile I suppose. Can you register a vehicle you've made yourself?

He's a repeat offender with no apparent value for human life. It's too bad he didn't wrap his car around a gas station pump.

Good. I know of people who flagrantly disobey the law and budget for speeding tickets. I wish we had that system over here so rich douchebags would think twice before putting us mere mortals at risk.

Kettle and pot? He may be a reckless asshole, but death is death and life is life.

If he wraps his sports car around a tree that's only one life. Better than hitting a school bus. Hopefully the quarter-million dollar speeding tickets will do his neighbourhood some good.

Better still would be just revoking his license. Then no one dies.

I can understand his anger. Fair enough, nobody was hurt but what if he did hit someone?

Agreed. Alot of people I know have had their licenses suspended for much less than this.
And certainly much better than an income based fine, which is just wrong.

Would you prefer fines be abritrary and at a flat rate?
Rich Asshole: A fine for $1,700? That's the cost of my new suit. Ehh, I'll buy it anyway.
Poor Asshole: A fine for $1,700?!? That's my rent for the next four months!!! My life is fucked!

Re: A $290,000 speeding ticket issude
Equality does not equal fairness, nor justice.
I lived in Florida for years, there's a law there against cutting down mangrove trees because they're a protected species. It's a flat fine per number of trees cut down.
I knew people who accidentally cut down a single mangrove that was encroaching onto their property because they failed to identify it, and they had to pay fines that could make someone lose their house. Conversely, ultra wealthy developers who wanted to build luxury condos would just pay to have acres of mangroves bulldozed, simply because they stood to make so much money from their development that the fines were a drop in the bucket. What's a fine of $2,000,000 when you are going to make $200,000,000 in profit?
Flat rates hurt the poorest the most, and give the rich a free pass to buy unpunished bad behavior. Could you imagine if we fined murders? We'd have billionaires blowing away valets who ding their cars and just writing a cheque to clear it all up.

This is assuming he'd actually stop driving, which may not be the case.

Re: A $290,000 speeding ticket issude
If I was holding a legal firearm, one I had a license to use, and nonchalantly pointed it at, say, your child, I think you'd consider that not only reckless but also very much me being an asshole, even if the weapon wasn't loaded and it was done without malicious intent.
If the gun was loaded, that'd be more comparable to the situation of driving a car at ridiculous speeds. If I discharged the weapon in your child's direction, but purposefully missed, that'd be even more on the level of danger the speeding vehicle presents.

Except that the penalties for driving without a license are considerably more substantial, and possibly include jail.

Well, he is quite wealthy, he might just hire a driver and have them speed for him.

Would the ticket be based off the driver's income? I sense loopholes

Re: A $290,000 speeding ticket issude
Perhaps the driver, being a professional driver, would have his license revoked and thus lose his means of living? Thus making drivers unwilling to speed for clients?
And if the driver is fired for not speeding, that'd be ground for a lawsuit.
