New Escapist Talent

Postby Machalllewis » 17 Mar 2010, 12:33

Okay, this is a thread about all the new stuff on the Escapist including, Game Dogs, Doraleous and Associates, A Good Nights Quest and most recently, I Hit it with my Axe.

Now, I have something of a prejudice here because while I find the first three I listed all well and good and very nice but kinda typical online series, I watched I Hit it with my Axe and was amazed! What the hell kind of awesome concept is that?! A group of alternate porn stars/strippers get round a table and play D&D? And thats all?

Yes it was shot pretty poorly but considering the fact that its basically a sort of documentary style thing then that can be forgiven. What I'm more impressed by is the fact that this humanises a group of people who are (especially on the internet) often seen as little more than low intelligence, cum dumpsters.

I honestly would class this as a feminist piece of cinematography. I just hope it stays in the same kind of vein as this first one, simply, they talk about both D&D and in a very modest, down to earth kind of way occasionally mention the fact that they have starred in pornographic films.
Nothing to see here.

I have only watched Good Knights Quest and Game Dogs but I dig em. Game Dogs especially.

I haven't watch Game Dogs, 'cause I'm not really a fan of the art style. But D&A is freaking great as is A Good Knight's Quest.
I Hit it with an Axe is pretty interesting, but I already knew that all porn stars are total geeks. (Which is pretty awesome by the way.) But yeah I'll definitely watch more of this.

I tend to not much watch of Escapist. I've watched some Game Dogs, it's passable but not something I really like.

Game Dogs started out quite badly, but has started to grow on me a little, to the point where I'm actually laughing at stuff in the episodes, rather than just cringing a little when I'm watching.
Doraleous and Associates is quite amusing, though that too can be a little hit and miss at times. Good enough to keep me watching though!
Dorian's Quest was an awesome concept, but now that they've actually made it into something it feels as it its lost some of its steam a little. Its definitely good, and I will keep watching it, but it doesn't feel like its really going anywhere really at the moment. Plus I'm still not entirely sure what's going on with the bearded guy with the two scantily clad chicks.
I'd Hit It With My Axe just goes to prove Ash's sentiment that to get people to actually notice you on the internet all you need is a pair of great tits. That isn't to say its a bad thing, I found it quite amusing to watch, although as much for the porn industry references as much as the role playing. I'm not gonna call this one either way yet though. It has the promise to be quite interesting, although if they're gonna update twice every 3 weeks, I'm not sure if I'll actually properly bother with it, and to be honest, once the 'OMG THERE ARE WOMEN WHO HAVE SEX FOR A LIVING PLAYING NERD GAMES' novelty has worn off, it could get really stale really quickly.

I watched a bit of I Hit It With My Axe and was thoroughly uninterested. It just seemed boring to me. I can understand the appeal it might have to guys and to DnD-lovers, but it didn't hold my attention at all.

I gotta say, I'm with Tim - it wasn't interesting. Pornstars are people too, yes. And if this video is anything to go on, they're fairly boring people. See my tweets comparing it to golf. (Apologies if you like golf.)

Machalllewis, gotta disagree about the feminist thing. If anything I thought it underlined our culture's unfortunate but frequent portrayal of women as being mainly valued as beautiful objects, flaky, insipid and without personality (due to being mostly sex objects).

I refuse to watch the series. I'm actually have a conversation about porn at the moment as well. But it just seems objectifying.

On another note. Seeing Tim and Tally talk about porn and sex are really messing with my view of the LRR world. You two are the innocent ones. You guys are supposed to be like, "Sex? Why, whatever are you talking about?"

It's like seeing Santa Claus eating venison...

You haven't heard me talk about sex, huh? Well I guess I tone it down for the internet. I'm afraid I've traumatized a few people who were most surprised to hear certain things from me...

Actually, Morgan and I had a most interesting conversation just the other day, while painting the new moonbase.

Not to sound overly risqué or anything. But I think sex is a very interesting, diverse, and much undiscussed (at least in conversational, informative, healthy and useful ways, especially between opposite genders) subject.

So there you are.

I agree that it was pretty boring and uninteresting. It's not bad, but there wasn't really anything redeemable about it. It seemed more like an intro or trailer for the show, rather than an actual show.

I'll give it another shot to see if they can do anything interesting with it. Regardless of their professions, which may be good for a couple laughs, this show is just watching some people play D&D, and that's only interesting in the long run when one of them is, say, Wil Wheaton. D&D is meant to be played, not watched.

When I first heard people describing I Hit with my Axe on Twitter I originally thought they were talking about World of Whorecraft from a couple years ago. I'd say it was pretty lousy but that would mean admitting to having watched it.

Well I don't think there's any shame in watching something once--it's important to do so if you're going to have a dialogue about it. It's frankly not something I, as a man who plays D&D, find at all captivating, but to each his own, I guess.

I've thrown around a lot of ideas for how I'd do a D&D series, and frankly this one wasn't on my list.

What everyone else said, except harsher. I'm not huge on most of the escapist, really. Not against it, either, just ambivalent....

But you know who I like on the escapist? Those loading ready run chaps. Sure, they're pretty new, but they've got heart, chutzpah, and I think we're going to be seeing a lot more from them.

...Unless those ENN guys and unskippable fellows get in the way, bogarting all of talent.

Also, ZP, I'll stick with my old reliables thank you very much.

I Hit It With My Axe is very interesting so far...I love hearing about people playing D&D - The Penny Arcade Podcasts are amazing, my favourite episodes of cH had the same elements and now there are a series of unbelievably hot pornstars/strippers playing...This is something I will be paying attention to.

Also, as far as all the other new videos go...I only really like Doraleous & Associates.
