You have no idea how hard I came when I saw this this morning. I seriously had to walk home to change my pants.

(I walked, because I didn't want to make a mess in my car.)

I should really read Scott Pilgrim.

YES. SO VERY YES. If there are midnight showings of this (I don't know what the criteria is for whether a film gets a midnight showing or not) then I'm going to be at it. If not, then first thing in the morning. Screw work, this is more important.

Sorry Jester, I just find it rude to waltz into a thread about a movie/game/show/music/book and express disinterest in it.

Well sorry. The whole concept just makes my eyes roll so hard I think they're in danger of falling out.

Wow, people seem really into this film. I mean, it looks good and I'll probably see it within the first week of it coming out, but according to the Internet it's going to be the Second Coming on sliced bread - am I missing something?

This is going to sound like the typical twi-hard defence, but if you knew the source material you wouldn't think it sucks.

The graphic novel series is a set of brilliantly written, pop-culture comedy-romance graphic novels. They draw indie rock, video game, and candian culture references, and a rather silly plot arc into a legitimately complex and compelling romance story.

Basically, it's really goddamn good, and it looks dumb on purpose.

Fair enough, I probably should take a look at the source material befiore I pass judgement, but I just can't get behind a romance that involves a party who is apparantly so bad at picking her suiters that every previous one is evil.

I don't deny the fight scenes will probably rock, but I need a bit more from my moives to enjoy them. :P

Oh, and I just about have the time of day for indie culture, but not much more. But that's just me personally.

I'm currently in the middle of the 3rd book. Does anyone know if the movie covers all of the books or only the first one?

There's a little more to it than that, but yes, that is the silly point on which the concept hinges. If you have trouble with the suspension of disbelief that there could exist a universe in which a girl's (who herself is a delivery girl for amazon that does her job travelling interdimensional highways, one of which runs through Scott's brain) exes might form into a league of supervillains who's mandate is to fight anyone that might want to date her, then you're going to have problems with the film, and it's source material.

It covers all six. However, because the script was finalized before the sixth book was written, O'Malley has stated that the movie's ending is very much the movie's ending, and may not be the same as that of the sixth book. (which is out on the 20th of July, FYI).

It's not the suspension of disbelief I have difficulty with, and actually the multidimensional delivery girl idea sounds pretty good, but it's my willingness to root for, support, and will to succeed a relationship where one of the participents is apparently just really bad at picking them that I have trouble with. I just really don't like poor matchups, even in real life. Especially in real life.

It's alot more complicated than that.

As far as I'm aware the story in the film diverges from the comics at the end of book 4. Clearly both story lines deal with all 7 exes, but the twins and Gideon will be different on-screen as a result of the timing of the writing.

ok, well, Yes, her exes are evil. But in context with the graphic novels, we don't know why yet, as that's the lynchpin of the whole story. They've been building up to Ramona's history for the entire book series so far.

So I can't answer your concern, other than to say that there's more to it than her just being bad at picking boyfriends.

The other thing to consider is that in the comics, the whole boyfriends thing isnt really the story, it's just what the story is structured around.

Eh, fair enough. I'll probably check it out then. See, this is why I came wandering in and asked why people like it so much. Ok, maybe I could have been a little politer, but what the hey. We got here in the end. ;)
