Casino Royale

Postby browncoat » 22 Nov 2006, 14:41

Just seen it, and I must say: Probably the best James Bond ever.

Though I have to warn you, it's not James Bond as you know him.
There are almost no gadgets, no "cool action" and absolutely no Q.
It's hard, dark and... well... a bit drama, I guess.

And I just can't get the title song out of my mind.

Generally, I think the "reboot" thing in the last couple of years it the best that ever happened to Hollywood (absolutely LOVED Batman Begins, and Superman Returns is great, too).
Too bad it was too late to save Star Wars or the Matrix...

Very true, but he becomes "Bond as you know him" at the end.

This is the first novel, so it's kind of an origin story. A little. Sort of.

Whatever, it's fucking awesome, go see it.

I thought it was just okay. but my real problem was that the whole time it just didn't feel like...bond.

(Uh, this wasn't me that posted this. My friend was glancing at the Forums as I've rescently introduced her to LRR and she just used my account. I'm still waiting on seeing it.)

The Next Gen episode was better.

I want to see it SO fucking badly but there is only ONE theatre in this little town called Guelph and I have no clue where it is. Seriously. My RA gave me detailed directions and I STILL don't know where it is.

Don't forget about the goat.
"I swear it," said the other mother. "I swear it on my own mother's grave."

"Does she have a grave?" asked Coraline.

"Oh yes," said the other mother. "I put her in there myself. And when I found her trying to crawl out, I put her back."

Yeah, they ate goat for dinner right before the herpes-sex.

And I think they rode one in the end into a sunset. Probably wasn't the same goat though.

I think a IMDB rating of 8.2/10 says something about the quality of that movie.

#229 of the Top 250.
Really not that bad for a movie that was rumoured to suck ; )

Who cares, it's a danish villain, it doesn't get better than that. Mads Mikaelsen ftw!

Couldn't stand the last Bond. You're right, it was NOT James Bond as I knew him. And considering I've seen every James Bond movie ever made multiple times, that's a bad thing. It means they've taken arguably the most established character in the history of film and and made radically altered him. If you're gonna do that, why bother even MAKING him that character? Why not just introduce someone new?

Don't even get me started on Superman (again)

P.S. I didn't even check the date of this thread. I thought someone had just seen it on DVD.

David, friendly advice: do not resurrect threads that are long dead unless there's been a big change in the status of whatever's being discussed, and even then, do it sparingly.

Since it's been brought up I may as well comment. I really liked it. It isn't bond as we know him, indeed. But I think this is okay, because its a "reboot", its an interesting angle on bond imo (he's so much more human in this one i reckon). If they did a complete copy of the old school casino royale set in modern times, it'd be kinda pointless. I also like how the movie as a whole is a bit toned down in terms of the "scope" (if thats the right word) of the action sequences, the last few bonds were getting fairly ridiculous.

I don't think knowing a character well means its wrong to change him. It is after all, a reboot and is technically not part of the same bond series we are familiar with. And he is a book character first. They make him james bond because the storyline is in essence the same as james bond's and to draw people to go watch it.

Says who? All the interviews I've read has it as a prequel.

I hate the "we used the name to get people to watch it." It's the same logic behind Smallville and the X-Statics version of X-Force, and it basically translated into "we wanted to use the reputation that other people had worked very hard to build as a shortcut to success for something unrelated."

True, there was a high gross of revenue created by those who went to the film merely because they are fans of the James Bond films and wanted this one to prove its worth, or merely to generate more fuel to mock the series. This Bond film is quite different than the others; although it has cheesy one liners occasionally, its much more along the lines of dramatic-action, with the occasional sprinkling of hot semi naked people.

Daniel Craig rocks my pants. And that's a fact.

it was (well, not really. it was the first bond story, just not the first major movie release). But bond in the book & bond on screen were very similar. Infact, to me this movie version of bond seemed more like the books.

Saw it, kinda liked it, kinda didn't. Friend thought I loved it, bought me the DVD. Have yet to watch it again.

The best part was of course with the torture scene. I feel nauseous thinking about that scene..
