I'd like to think that I'm in love.

And I never said that 'love' wasn't strong, or couldn't overcome things, and you saying that I must be stunted in my beliefs because I don't 'believe' in love is...well, I can't quite work out how I should feel about that.

Sure love CAN last for a lifetime, but that doesn't mean it will. If it did, there would be no divorce, no break-ups, couples would never argue. Because love would overcome all of of that.

Love is not necessarily a permanent emotion. It can fade, change, and disappear entirely. Two people might grow apart because they change. People can change, grow, and evolve. Sometimes for the better, sometimes not. To think that 'love' will stay constant, for everyone, throughout a lifetime of changes is to place far too much significance on a single emotion. And that's assuming that the single emotion would overpower and override all and any other feelings that one might develop about an other person.

And yes, it's possible for feelings and ideas to develop that are detrimental, or contradictory to this feeling of love. It's natural. People change their ideas all the way through their lives, if they didn't, you'd still have the exact same tastes and opinions that you had when you were twelve.

In short, I think you're wrong when you assign such a galactic amount of strength to this emotion. It can feel incredible, yes, and it can inspire people to do amazing things, AND it can make two people want to to stay together until they day they die.

But it's not always going to do that. It can grow, sure.

But it can also fade, decay, and crumble away entirely. And there doesn't always have to be one single reason for that.

And I'd like to think that just because I hold these sentiments, it doesn't mean that I don't understand love, or haven't experienced enough of it.

Also! As per oracles, not sure I've explained my usage of that term before.

Oracles simply speak to the gods. It's really less interesting than it sounds. Some deities make a show of it, but that's not my style. Besides, I'd not be allowed a religion even if I wanted one.

My oracles are merely my friends and advisors. They all know what I claim to be, although most don't quite know what to think about such stories. Others don't care, and a few inexplicably act as if they need no proof, a notion which amuses me. As someone who has never felt much "faith", I find it curious to see others display such in me, of all people.

The oracles are not organized, partly by design, and they have no real duties or necessary tasks. They need not even agree with my views of the universe, per se. They're just people I trust and care for, and they me.

I still don't agree with you, Theremin. You and I have different opinions on the matter and that is fine by me, but I'm not going to go into a further discussion about it on a congratulations thread. I don't really want to derail a positive event.

Alja-Markir wrote:As per the whole promise of love discussion, which my post accidentally cropped up in the middle of, I can see both sides of the issue.

Personally, I have an odd definition of love. When I say I love someone, it means I want them to be happy, even at my own expense. This broadens the usage of the word, and makes love into a near universal with very few exception and a broad spectrum of intensity. The more I love someone, the more I am willing to compromise my own happiness for theirs. The less I love someone, the less willing I am to go out of my way for them.

In that light, I can say that I understand the notion of always loving someone. Your love might diminish if they do terrible things, but I've yet to have my love for anyone entirely extinguished. Even those who have hurt and wronged me I still wish to find happiness, because hopefully it will lead them to be better people, and because suffering only ever begets more suffering, so I'd not wish it even on my enemies.

Then again, I also understand the human inability to foresee the future. One cannot possibly know how one will feel in ten years. Who we are as people changes, and the person you are today will be dead and gone by the time you have become the you of the future. You may always love someone, but you may not always want to spend your life with them.

That said, in light of both positions I should add that I believe that love is not so much a choice as it is a response. There are certain qualities one requires to be able to love others, and there are certain qualities within others which trigger responses in ourselves. There is a lot of variance and imprecision, much influenced by our choices, but ultimately I feel that the heart makes its own choices and that love is beyond human control.

Granted, it is important to make the distinction between possessing the emotion of love for another, and acting upon that emotion. But that's a whole other discussion for another time.

~Alja~

Alja, You and I share more than a love of the trebuchet and the space-time meandering. Eventually, though, you have to realize that the people worth loving, and I say this not to say their are few, but to clarify an important point, want you to be happy too. Being in love, I've realized, is when two people love each other, only want to see the best for each other, and, at the time, see no option to that end that doesn't involve being together.

In short, love is hard, but being in love can at least lend you a partner in the ordeal.

To Mimm and Lying, I hope, and believe, that in this time, before these gathered representatives of interwebs and teh funnieness, you have found that partner in each other. As my people say, and in honor of the historically long standing Anglo-Portuguese Alliance, Boa Sorte!
Time flies when I launch grandfather clocks from my trebuchet.

I tend to say that love allows two people to be selfish together.

that is to say that, when you are in love with someone, their happiness makes you happy, so you spend all your time with them trying to make them happy, because seeing them smile is the most amazing thing in the world. You want to make them happy, because that makes you happy, and they try to make you happy because it makes them happy, so the overall joy spirals as you each try to make each other as happy as you can.

Yeah, seriously, dude... opinions are valid and all, but starting a debate on the nature of love in the middle of a congratulatory thread isn't exactly the way to go.

Anyways, though I'm relatively new around here, congratulations and all the best!

Why does it have to be like...half of one, then half of the other?

Why can't it be fused in more awesome(at least more amusing) ways?
