Oh shit...

Postby Dana » 08 Dec 2006, 13:38

My not-playing-MMO days are at an end. Because I will have no choice but to play a Firefly MMO.
"I swear it," said the other mother. "I swear it on my own mother's grave."

"Does she have a grave?" asked Coraline.

"Oh yes," said the other mother. "I put her in there myself. And when I found her trying to crawl out, I put her back."

I have mixed feelings about this. If it's going to be well made and Whedon is actually involved, great. But if this is just Fox trying to make some money off of the cult status of the show then it gives me even more reason to hate them.

I'll wait for the first player reviews to come in before getting my hopes up. Like Captain said, if they just do a Galaxies it won't be worth playing for free, let alone a monthly fee.

Actually, reading this, I've been given some hope:

The online version will move away from those central characters -- after all, there's only one Mal Reynolds. In an MMORPG, "everybody has to have their own story," says Multiverse co-founder and executive producer Corey Bridges.

The one thing that fucked up Galaxies for me was the fact that I just wanted to be in the universe, I didn't have to be shooting down imps with Han and Chewie to feel like I was playing a Star Wars game.

Judging from the comments at Whedonesque, Joss isn't involved.

Also, there doesn't seem to be an actual game, just the license for a game.

Didn't Fox cancel the show?

Um, yes. Eleven episodes into its first season.

Technically they don't usually cancel shows, just put them on hiatus, but whether that's any different from canceling a show is debatable.

I fear that this will become a piece of crap.
Sure, the 'verse is a cool place, but Firefly lived mainly from the writing and the acting, only marginally from it's setting.
So maybe they'll make a good game, but they will hardly be able to catch the Firefly spirit.

I have to wonder what the gameplay will actually be. The thought of Mal wandering off into the countryside outside of, say, Ariel and massacreing the local wildlife for XP is kind of hilarious. Perhaps if it was more story-oriented and less of a level-grind . . .

You do all realize that there's no game, right?

Yup, but we speculate about what it will be, if it comes to be.

you know, I fear this, we know I love the verse more than most, but I mean, who here played The Matrix online... fuck I am glad I got in on that in beta, it was terrible. WoW is really the only decent MMO in my mind, this could go bad

I see it as ending up being a lot like EV Nova... :?
(Not that EV Nova isn't an awesome game.)

Does anyone remember Ultima Online? I enjoyed that a starting character could actually be killed by a wandering chicken.

It was almost as good as when the world filled up with boats.

City of Heroes and City of Villains are pretty awesome, and though it's still in cb, I can tell you that 9Dragons, a free MMo to boot, is really fucking awesome.

WoW is currently the only online game I play, though a few others I like are Flyff and Rappelz, both by GPotato. The 9Dragons game looks like it might be fun when its open beta/released.

That's Penny Arcade, not PvP. I can't find a PvP about the Firefly MMO at all - am I just looking in the wrong place?
