I just played a match on the ai to practice my BO. I've been trying to be disciplined and stick to it better and I really felt like I made some progress.

I've been going Marine Marauder and Siege Tanks as my sort of key units. And so I started out, I've been watching that Day9 daily and taking tips from it like not queueing up lots of units and trying to keep my timing in order. I kept building scvs and actually had full saturation on my main before I realised and said oops, need to expand. I had the money to and did, but it snuck up on me. Towards teh end of the game though my economy was just churning out crystal that I could not spend fast enough, which I think I can fix if I build more barracks (I was on a 2 barracks 1 factory 1 starport) at the end. The star port exclusively popping out medivacs for support and one Viking to spot high ground. I think I might actually be capable of handling myself online a little bit now.

So i'm confused about something, i played some random 1v1 games so far and in the majority of games my opponent would send one attack down my way and the moment that fails quit the game. And not even a smart attack, basically just pumping out units and then rushing towards my chokepoint. Does that happen to anybody else?
And why do they do that, sure it might be an idea to abandon a game you're going to lose but how the hell can you learn anything if you quit the moment you can't rush somebody.

That happened my first match, the guy I was fighting just sent stalkers after me, which was easy to counter with my marine marauder build, then I snuck some siege tanks into his base via a medivac and he just raged. I think some people just read what unit is 'good' and then just spam it.

I really don't like the new look of Battlecruisers (though that Pirate one still looks cool), but they kick just as much, if not more ass, than they did previously. Even if I can't get them to fire all their Yamato Cannons at once.

Siege Tanks, Goliaths, and Marines are more cost-efficient, and just as destructive though.

If you want multiple Yamato-cannon-firings, you have to keep pressing the hotkey. Maybe shift-clicking the button works too, not sure.

Key to the Yamato is to just keep spamming Y and then clicking I've found, you dont get simuldeath but it is rather entertaining to watch the enemy get obliterated by it.

Woo! I finally plucked up enough courage to play some of my 1v1 placement matches, and they were fun! I lost one and won one. I've been playing Terran so far (because I know how they work from the campaign) but I think I'll give Protoss a try soon.

hey! that's my 1v1 record, too! I started the campaign, and played a couple of ladder placement games. I like the way the campaign is structured, but some of the mission objectives are horrendous to achieve!

I spent ages last night trying to get the last Mar Sara achievement for destroying 4 hatcheries on the defense mission. I finally got it at around 1am, which is waaaay too late for me to be going to bed with work the next day.

I agree. I'm particularly fond of the fact that all the missions are so different from one another that they never get tiring, even now when I'm going back for achievements.

The one thing about the missions that annoyed me is how 80% of them are on a timer. Different kinds of timers, but still timers.

I really like the zombie outbreak mission, even though it gets ridiculous on hard mode.

I've found that the key to that mission is Reapers. They chew through buildings really easily, and can take down the zombies without a problem too. I didn't build a single hellion on that mission.

I love reapers. They're an integral part of my early/midgame offensives.

that one's my favourite mission :D

also, my 1v1 record is 1 and 4... and i am pretty sure my win was due to either a disconnect or the guy feared my counter attack to point of quitting: basically he tried harassing my base with stalkers, but i was able to widdle his strike forces down and then just sent everything i had to his base. when i destroyed a few structures, i got the victory screen. got the Counter-Proof achievement while i was at it. ;)

Well that was a pain in my arse. I just finished my worst game yet. I played terribly. Still won but my god did I phail hard. It was terran v Zerg on one of the novice maps so it had those rocks. I hate those rocks. They completely threw me off. I did my usual build and then was like, fuck rocks I cant scout him with out reapers. So I figure, okay fine whatever I'll reaper and proceed with my build. Well my reapers were pretty good at harassing but not scouting. So I eventually build up a force I think is enough to cause some damage its marine marauder and seige tank and I cruise out, this guy still hasnt expanded. so I roll on it but holy shit the zerglings.

Okay hes only building lings I say, fine I'll go air, slap down a starport and start building up banshees and vikings. Harass some more do some damage, he starts blobbing up hydras so I say, okay air isnt going to work with out some serious fire power. Train up some BCs and send them out to take out the high yields which he had recently expanded to. Do a fair bit of damage by the hydra blob is to much. So I back off, and begin to throw thors into my marine marauder. I also throw a couple of ghosts down. Nuke his main, like 3 times. But its all mined out so I only kill of buildings. He starts spamming detectors. So now I feel like its going to go to macro so my I decided my best bet is to supply block him and then deal with these blobs. Start to build more BC's and upgrade to Yamato cannon. Then the hunt begins, whilst my BC's are moving around the field I have a huge force of 8 thors and about 20 marines/marauders, going around trying to eliminate hydras. My BCs find the overlords. But they're surrounded by like 12 Spore Crawlers I was like WTF!? he was so paranoid of my BC armada. The thors take down the spore crawlers and the chase for the overlords begins. Eventually I chase them all down. And I start looking for all the other bases he's made. In the end I won but it took over an hour. At the end I felt like such a noob because I'd been doing so well at getting my build out and everything only to be thrown completely off kilter because my process was interrupted by a set of rocks.

Additionally he did not attack my base once, the whole game. I was shocked and frankly a little bored because I'd have to wait for units to come out of the queue to queue up there next ones and I'd just be sitting there microing SCV's round to do work that I had missed during the fighting. Needless to say, I fail hardcore, still won though...

In the end having 12 BC's and 6 thors walking round bothering his ground forces and blowing up hatcheries as they were thrown down was how I won and I felt terrible.

Woohoo! I finally played my remaining 3 placement matches, and got placed in a Bronze league. Which was exactly what I was expecting given my performance: 2 Wins, 3 Losses. My last 2 games were actually really fun. I lost the first to a bunch of cloaked banshees, completely forgetting that I could reveal them with a scan (d'oh!). I won the last one after fending off several medivac drops from my opponent, failing to push in with some battlecruisers which got pummeled by Vikings before finally winning with the classic 3M push.

I'm looking forward to playing more in my division and maybe winning some more games :)
