Desert Bus 2010 try or fail.

Postby Machalllewis » 30 Sep 2010, 16:52

Hey. My net nick is Machalllewis. Ive not been posting on this forum so much these past 9 odd months.

Ive come back on to make an announcement. Yeeeahh

Ive taken a week off my job in the last week of November in order to watch desert bus.

Heres my challenge to myself. I will watch from minute one of desert bus and stay awake for at least 5 days. I will be on the chat for the entire time. I will stay online watching and listening till I fall asleep at my computer.

This is not for charity, its not for helping anyone else. I just want to experience as much desert bus in one go that I can. 5 days is the target. I dont know if I will make it. All i know is that Im gonna try my shit hardeningist most to make it.

I dunno if I'll make it all I know is that I'll be singing along with the LRR crew.

So just sing it with me and dream on.

Thankyou

Mac.

Sing for the sketches sing for the fuss,
Sing it with me,
Sing for the fun, sing for the charity
Sing for Graham sing for my clarity.
Sing it with me
Sing for the hell of it, sing to cover your back
Sing for all of us, sing for the Mac.

I wholeheartedly agree that this deserved its own separate topic.

Anyway, good luck, but you're going to die (admittedly, in an awesome way).

So... can we get a pool going on how many hours it'll be until you pass out? And can I call 61? 61 hours seems like a good number.

42 has generally being my limit, but with desert bus to keep one occupied, that won't be a problem. So I'm putting my money on 69.

Can I have your computer when you go insane and throw yourself out a window?

The whole "5 days without sleep makes you legally insane" thing is a myth. Other than how legal insanity is grossly misunderstood by...everyone, I have a friend who has gone five days sans sleep before, with no significant ill effects. Granted, he already has Tourette's, OCD, ADHD, and is currently being diagnosed for Bipolar Disorder, but still.

Seriously, here - no troll - good luck, man.

May you succeed, suffer no long term effects and enjoy every one of those seventy-two-hundred minutes of DBFH!

I'll be in there as much as I can, encouraging and engaging you (when I can remember). 120hrs - I'll try to help (including tell you to sleep if you REALLY seem to be in trouble with it).

(Interesting note; I was already listening to a certain tune by Gnarls Barkley before I opened this thread...omen or just happy coincidence?)

That sounds potentially dangerous ....

Just make sure to actually sleep if you really need to. Don't push yourself beyond the realm of reasonable safety.

Seriously, CALM DOWN. It's sleep deprivation; that period where we 'recharge' - immune system function and wound healing appear to be the only remotely physical effects tied to sleep (reaction speed is impaired with even small 'sleep debt' but quickly recovers when 'the debt is paid off'.)

i.e. If he's got a cut, it's gonna heal more slowly without sleep (despite lack of kinetic activity, our metabolism decreases only fractionally during sleep - I think that 'surplus' energy is being directed to 'maintenance functions' :) ).

Also he'll be more prone to a cold or flu due to being 'run down' and fatigued mentally and physically. And having an infection would make things worse, since fighting it would cause the immune system to draw more of the body's energy. (I caught flu back during DBFH2, spent a lotta time sleeping in my chair in front of the stream :? )

The only REAL issue involved with voluntarily depriving oneself of sleep for several days on end, especially for the purpose of watching a webcast, would be impaired memory processing and recall - you may well watch everything that happens on DBFH for the first five days, Mac, but you may also never remember it thereafter due to them not being 'imprinted' into LTM properly from sleep.dep. :(

And for the record, Randy Gardner holds the scientifically documented record for the longest period of time a human being has intentionally gone without sleep not using stimulants of any kind: 264 hours - 11 days - and is documented with the above mental and psychological effects, along with mood swings, irritability, paranoia, delusion and loss of concentration...

...all of which he recovered completely from within forty-eight hours of ending the voluntarily sleeplessness and 'rebounding' by sleeping fourteen hours at first, staying awake automatically for the next twenty-four, then sleeping eight as usual.

So, my prediction is that Mac's gonna be rather...weird as things progress, and whether he makes it through the one-twenty or succumbs to brief 'microsleeps' will have to be seen; I'd be eager to team up with him in this, but I know I won't be able to get time off work around then (four years now and despite requests, they always turn me down due to 'too busy in the midst of the Holiday Season' :( ) so I'll have to satisfy myself by trying to assist Mac as I can.

Good luck with this, man! :)

The worst thing he'll get is the so-called "ICU Psicosis", and a normal night of sleep will fix that.

You know its actually really very sweet the level of support that this has already generated.

I'm touched! And not even in a Catholic Priest kinda way.

Yeah still waiting to see if the hospital will grant me the time off but theres no reason why they won't so fingers crossed.

Two addendums. If people really want to bet on what time I pass out then do you think we could make it an actual thing? Say 5 american dollars per bet, winner gets half the other half goes to the children? No winner then it all goes? There must be a way to see the last time that I post in the chat right?

The other is that I'm trying to come up with a parody song entitled "No Sleep till Tucson" obviously set to the tune of the Beastie Boys "No sleep till Brooklyn"

Feedback appreciated obviously.

I told myself I was going to try something like this last year. I bought an entire case of energy drinks. I was also super excited about Desert Bus starting.

Unfortunately, I had to get up at 5:00 am that morning, and DB didn't start until 9:00 pm that night. As I wavered on the edge of consciousness around the 24 hour mark, I thought, "You know what? This is my vacation. If I go back to work even more exhausted than I was before, I'm doing something wrong." So I slept. I did put my laptop by my bed and left the stream on, so even my dreams were of Desert Bus, but sleeping turned out to be far more appealing than not sleeping.

So basically, I think it's a fun goal, I wish you lots of luck with it, and I wouldn't hold it against you if part way through you just said, "Screw this, I'm getting some sleep."

During Desert Bus I'm usually viewing from 11am to 6am. One of the funnest weeks of the year for me.
