Re: Quidditch seeks NCAA recognition
My university had a quidditch team for a while, but this year they actually changed it to meet the standards of the IQA and they are having their own tournament this spring.

Re: Quidditch seeks NCAA recognition
On of my cousins set up a Harry Potter and Gin club at his Uni last year, and this year they apparently had about five hundred people turn up, and ended up with two hundred and fifty members... making it the largest group at the Uni.
It's not quite on topic, but it's Harry Potter related, and awesome.

Urgh.
Really?
At least drop the brooms and capes and make a real game out of it.

Those were actually the rules that we played by when I was there. I liked it more that way too. I mean, how can you hold the bludger and the bat at the same time when trying to keep the broom in between your legs and run at the same time.
As for the snitch being someone dressed in yellow running around, we thought of two alternatives at one point: making my friend's service dog the snitch and setting him loose (he's a speed demon if he wants to be, but he's also uber friendly, so he'd probably run up to you if you called his name), or making our friend Jessica the snitch (she uses an electric power chair, we are a bunch of geeks, including electrical engineers. You can see how this would have worked.)
King Kool, you just have never tried to play quidditch. Believe me, it is nothing like LARPing.
In conclusion, GO TEAM SLYTHERPUFF!

I didn't say it was LIKE LARPing.
I said it was worse.
I got no big beef with LARPers, so long as they're sane.

Alright, so I've rewatched about half of this... I'd forgotten how fun this game was, though I don't like my voice in it... Or the fact that he cut off halfway through my dream narration... Or the fact that it took so long for me to show up again after my scripted death... But here's a link to the first part! If you wanna see a *good* LARP. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR6PENAgdoE

Quidditch can't exist, and here's why.
You can't fly on a broom.
You can't have a snitch, because an AI that would fly around uncontrollably would fly out of reach, BECAUSE YOU CAN'T FLY AFTER IT.
Geez.

Anatidaephobia - a pervasive, irrational fear that one is being watched by a duck.

I'm not crazy (Well not for this reason) I just mean, if people are scoffing going "You can't play Quidditch because you can't fly", I'm just saying that the sport is actually called Muggle Quidditch or Quidditch for short, as its meant to be a real life and playable version of a game from a beloved book.
I see it as harmless fun (The whole point of a game), I'm sure the vast majority of people who play it don't actually imagine themselves flying while playing, there just playing a fun variant of the game*.
Kind of like French Cricket

Re: Quidditch seeks NCAA recognition
But surely if you don't play up the Potter-LARPing aspect of it, there's no point in playing it. I can't imagine the actual sporting experience compares favourably with other sports.
There are sports which have robust rule sets and provide a satisfying combination of mental and physical challenge, and there are sports which are copied from a fictional game - physically impossible at our current level of technological development - outlined vaguely by an author whose purpose was to provide background detail to her fictional world rather than create a viable sporting experience. Don't make me draw you a Venn diagram.

Re: Quidditch seeks NCAA recognition
I've never quite got the point of quidditch even though I am a huge potter nerd. For me therer is no point to the game if the snitch is involved. They mention that very rarely does the team that catches the snitch lose. In my opinion that just makes everyone else on the field useless. I think if you were to get rid of the snitch entirely, not have the players run around with brooms you might get a decently playable game.
Hello world, remember me? I'm the sad little fuck that you failed to see, who you should have recognized When you had the chance. Hello motherfuckers now its time to dance
