Younnat, & the amazing music in Daily Drop

Postby Evil Jim » 04 Nov 2010, 00:03

First, you've seen LRR's new series of short shorts, Daily Drop, right? Ok, good.

One thing that drew me into the series is the music. The pieces selected were just perfect for the wonder inspired by the oddity of seeing objects react in the slow-mo environment of the videos. I've loved every piece of music so far & have been listening to the half-dozen tracks I've downloaded on a continuous loop for a couple days.

It helps that I love this type of music anyway; varied, electronic & melodic, with a touch of quirk. So I did some searching & found the following about Younnat, the composer of the music used in the Daily Drop so far:

Younnat's YouTube page wrote:Younnat - is not a DJ, though he is alone on the stage, and not an orchestra, although he uses a great number of unusual instruments. Younnat -- is Oleg Serdyuk's solo electronic project of keyboard player of the Lyuk band [Ukraine].

In his performance he uses various unusual electronic devices like speed wheel, joystick, gamepad, desktop keyboard and some handmade controllers.

You can download the tracks used in the series on The Escapist here. The main theme is known as Old Movies Not Terrible

More music available at his website. He's also on MySpace, LastFM, etc.

So is it just me that is crazy about this guy's music or does it have this effect on everyone?

No, I am not a shill. I just love the music.

I certainly love Old Moveis Not Terrible but I can't say I've tracked Younnat's stuff down with as much veracity as you have. I agree 100% that he's really good, though. ;)

I've yet to actually download or listen to his stuff in any real depth, but I agree a lot of it is strangely hypnotic and very easy listening, if a little unusual, and I definitely intend to get as much of his stuff as I can, as soon as I have the time and effort to do so!

I noticed on his Last.fm page he has quite a few tracks available for free to download, so it might be worth grabbing those to see how good the rest of his stuff is.

I only really like Old Movies Not Terrible.

The other ones they use I find rub me a little weird.

I do REALLY like Old Movies Not Terrible though.
I can put my hands in my head, and I can laugh it in the face.

Old Movies Not Terrible certainly gets stuck in my head most often, probably because I hear it on a daily basis.

King Kool: No, I just get excited about stuff.

So far I like a bit of Younnat's work, he doesn't sound like all the generic 5 note loops that exist in so much of the electro music I find.

So I purchased & downloaded Ryba via Amazon last week & have been quite enjoying it. A few of the tracks are the same as what you can get for free on the Escapist website (as used in the Daily Drop,) but they're different mixes & I'm not sure which would be considered the "originals." One track I particularly like is "Jedi Arkadiy" which uses an interesting mash of sounds from Star Wars. There's a preview available on Amazon. Also, you can get it in Younnat's "The Duct" album.

I've always liked The Day After Tomorrow. It sounds like something out of Knytt Stories, and I love Knytt Stories.

The music is one of my favorite things about Daily Drop. I don't know why I never bothered to investigate this myself!

The first time I heard Yessss in a Daily Drop I thought that it was Matt speaking & chuckling in the background of that video.

After listening to most of Younnat's stuff I have to say that Old Movies Not Terrible is ok, but some of the other stuff resonates a lot more with me. As theme music I think it's a great choice, but for general listening I prefer some of the other stuff.

Yessss in particular is great.

When I am working on my papers i need some music without text (that I understand) and that is not too repetitive... and yesss is the second (god lord hellmarch is great) I have not gone sick of in a week so that will be my work-song for the next many years
If I'm half-mad, then which do you think I consider my better half?

So guys... I've got the first page all inked and scanned. Should I post it un-coloured or colour it before sharing it? Would anyone be interested in having a go at the colours themselves?

I just realised I posted that in completely the wrong thread. Woops.

The first page of the LRR/Thudercats mashup comic I started talking about in the Pumpkin Carving Competition thread. That's where my last post was supposed to go. Guess I'll copy-paste it over. ^^;
