why does any writer thing it's a good idea for the main character, or indeed any character, to quip during a fight? Seriously? It made spidy sound like a 15 year old looser. Eugh.

Besides throwing his enemies off-guard, it's also to distract himself from suffering a complete breakdown from actually thinking about what he's doing. Remember, when he first started his schtick, he WAS a 15 year old loser. Now he's accepted and is used to what he does, yes, but it's also expected of him now. Him not equipping would be like having Batman not be crazy prepared or Reed Richards to not be useless (no tvtropes links because I'm on my phone).
