The Escapist's new Monday show: Jimquisition

Postby Wolfenbarg » 18 Apr 2011, 15:36

If you haven't seen it yet, here it is: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/ ... et-Over-It

Personally, I haven't been able to stand Jim Sterling since his highly inflammatory "Casual Gamers Are Better Than You" article on the Escapist a few weeks back. It was about as insightful as it sounds, and it got a lot of justified backlash. How to follow up with that? Let's give him a show!

Now I do think the site needed a show to sit beside the LRR dominated Mondays to give them some balance like the rest of the weekdays have, but this really has to be the worst possible show. The format is boring, the topic has already been tread over better by Yahtzee and Extra Credits, and the overly antagonistic approach of the creator isn't at all endearing like Zero Punctuation or MovieBob. Quite ashamed to see this crap sitting next to the greatness of a commodore Hustle video.

What do all of you think?

I thought it was alright. The only dissapointment was that I was expecting him to come out with a Bronx accent.

I actually quite liked the "Casual Gamers..." article, but I agree that this first episode didn't really cover anything that hasn't already been discussed on the Escapist fairly recently. I'll wait for the 2nd and 3rd episodes before I make my mind up.

After seeing the banner, my only question would of been "Who the fuck are you, and why the fuck should I care about anything that comes out the shit hole you call a mouth?"

In other words, I really disliked the ad for his show.

Thank you, my good man.

Edit:
Having watched an episode, I have to agree with the other negative comments. His show is neither funny or entertaining, it has zero production values, the one-camera approach is boring & his flapping hand & juttering head are annoying to watch.

On the plus side, he stands in front of a blank wall, making it easy to photoshop him into photos & videos that are actually entertaining.

So, which do we prefer as a whole? This show, or Top 5 with Lisa Foiles?

"We"? I don't like that idea that there needs to be a community wide opinion about something. That just makes me want to have the exact opposite opinion so I could be the cool rebel guy that you people clearly assume me to be. *shifty eyes*

On Topic: It was alright. He has some valid points, but it's mostly just poorly produced ramblings similar to a standard post in a forum. I'm not sure if it's show worthy. Plus the blue E already has both an angry British guy and an angry chubby guy wearing shades.

The guy's been on my radar for a while. I posted about this show over at the Escapist already, so I'll just copypasta.

About the vid:

Theremin wrote:Two camera angles. Something, anything, that stops the video being just a static shot of a man doing stand-up. It doesn't have to be a slideshow, like Moviebob or Yahtzee, but, for christ's sake, DO something with the camera.

If you're using a visual medium, it generally helps to have some kind of dynamic or entertaining visual element.

Also, lose the sunglasses. If you cover your face, you're handicapping your ability to convey emotion, which really isn't a help if you're doing a to-camera piece.

In response to a debate in the thread regarding accusations of misogyny that have been levelled at Jim Sterling:

Theremin wrote:I had never heard of the the guy being accused of misogyny, so I investigated and found a post from a blog about gender in gaming about the whole incident.

http://gomakemeasandwich.blogspot.com/2011/02/in-his-words-why-jim-sterling-is-in.html

I think it's better than the links you've [other user] been given because it doesn't cherry-pick quotes, has varied sources, cites those sources, and acknowledges that the exchange that incited the whole incident was not an *entirely* one-sided affair.

That said, from reading this and a couple of other things, I'm pretty convinced that it's a legitimate complaint. I understand that he often uses comedy in his writing, but some of the stuff he comes out with goes beyond hyperbole. The guy definitely comes across as really revolting in a lot of ways and I'm avoiding any projects he's involved with in the future.

I know exactly what cunts look like. I'm talking to one right now

Just ask your husband for permission before using the computer next time.

People like you *revel* in sexism, so sure. I'm just giving you what all attention-seeking little bitches crave.

You're the embarrassment. To your gender, your species, and all feminazi sluts like yourself.

Whoa, what a Piece Of Shit

every time someone on the internet says "Why do they call it feminism instead of EQUALISM??? hmmm??" I'll imagine the face of this wormy dog turd

If pornography is to end, then all women on Earth have to be murdered, and that's just not my scene. Perhaps it's okay for Adolf Hitler and his cackling Feminist cohorts, but we reasonable people who aren't Nazis don't agree.

e: Since women are basically just 3D porn, what is an anti-pornography stance if not an anti-female stance?

lmao this is too much i can't keep reading this

...women are basically just 3D porn

Feminists are so unable to take a joke, they'd probably find themselves legitimately offended by the obvious trolling flamebait of some random videogame blogger who pumps out list columns in order to reap some quick and easy pageviews.

Haha they're so dumb. i have cleverly cloaked my hatred of women in an ironic echo chamber brimming with fellow pubescent antisocial shits. i've finally managed to grab the attention of women over the internet; free from my disrupting odor they can now focus clearly on my shitty personality~

Taking hyperbole seriously, the thread.

Like wow guys, Jim Sterling has been a pretty well known games writer for a long time now. Way to get trolled.

Show kinda sucks; Jim is an okay guy.

Why do they call it feminism instead of EQUALISM??? hmmm??

That's actually kind of a good question, although the term most people use is Humanism. Seeing as gender binaries are harmful to literally every person on earth, it seems kind of small-minded to focus on women when the same causes are fucking over men and all manner of transgender people.

Of course, the answer is that people gotta worry about the issues that affect them the most. You can't squash every injustice at the same time.

No, you see, he's being sexist ironically so it's cool, maybe when you're older you will be able to appreciate the masterful satire of Jim Sterling or should I say Jim...stewart???

And this post is so much more mature.

No, you see, he's being sexist ironically so it's cool

Actually, yeah. The entire schtick is that he's saying stuff that is obviously completely retarded to call attention to the fact that many people who make games apparently actually do think that way. Hence, X-blades.

It started off rocky, but I never miss an episode now. She ditched a lot of the static bits that plagued the early episodes and mixed in a lot of the side stuff that is genuinely entertaining. Also, while nowhere near the level of cracked.com, the show has the same tendency to pick things rather obscure or not so obvious. So it's become funny, and promotes non-mainstream greatness. Win-win.

So Top 5 all day.

Even if you're being sexist ironically you're still normalizing misogyny and even if you're using the word 'cunt' ironically you're normalizing a harmful gendered insult in an intentionally deprecating context! His entire 'schtick' reinforces the idea that people can not only protect their shitty opinions under the all-encompassing cloak of irony or satire, but people will even validate those shitty opinions for you, and anyone who doesnt laugh or can't "Get it" is stupid or sensitive and worthy of being mocked because you're a middle class white internet male so how could you be wrong.

Do you seriously think the message that his audience is getting is that the games industry is misogynistic and not "woman lmao" he doesnt even claim that himself! He writes this caustic shit and dubs it flamebait that gets him page views

There's a meme in that somewhere...Sexist Hipster?

Anway, I made it to about 1:20 before I started to nod off. Which was rather surprising since I was wide awake. I found his sunglasses to be distracting since you could see the reflection of lights in them and it sounded like there was some very faint music playing in the background that I kept trying to listen to more than him.

I'm guessing this is his thing? Complain about stuff that he knows people get upset about?

Good points made, if not shimmering with originality. I didn't watch the video, I minimized the window and listened while renaming some LRRcasts I downloaded so my mp3 player will play them in the right order. I don't know too much about Mr. Sterling other than his other stuff on The Escapist, but I'm sensing Jimquisition would work better solely as audio.
