The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread yet?
The splinter twin decks can flash out the exarch end of the opponents turn on t3, then splinter twin it their turn 4. It's a lot harder to interrupt.

How long does a pre-release generally take?
I'm trying to plan my day, and part of it involved going to a prerelease tomorrow from noon to...unknown, which makes life hard.
I'd go worst case, and say all 64 players that can show up do, for the swiss round tournament.

Most of the afternoon. Assume you'll be there for several hours at least.

Okay, tweaked Myr Engine into V7
First few games with the modified deck turned out very well, in a 3-player against a white brute deck and a green infect I came out the victor having only put together the loop near the end and 114 life from Clearwater, Coretapper, and Myr Reservoir.
Definitely going to sideboard the remaining roster of Fabricate and Mystic Speculation, along with the Dispels and Myr Reservoirs.Artifacts
- Clearwater Goblet x2
- Darksteel Reactor x2
- Everflowing Chalice x2
- Golem Foundry x2
- Myr Reservoir x2
- Myr Turbine x3
- Titan Forge x2
Creatures
- Coretapper x3
- Iron Myr x4
- Myr Galvanizer x4
- Palladium Myr x2
Spells
- Banefire x3
- Fabricate x3
- Mystic Speculation x3
- Splinter Twin x3
- Stoic Rebuttal x4
- Turn Aside x4
Land
- Izzet Boilerworks x4
- Island x11
- Mountain x6

Should be home by 5 or 6?
Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread yet?
Well I'm expecting to be on the train home from the prerelease I'm headed to around 6pm. So think what you will of that.

though the 2 myr battelspheres and a Elspeth helped went white red only lost to some bad plays on my part and a bit of mana screw, if i was a better pilot i would have probably won the toury to be honest

Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread yet?
So, the theme of the prerelease was that I had a deck filled with disgusting bombs and everyone kept using them against me. Praetor's Grasp, Phyrexian Metamorph, Enslave, Karn... it was just non-stop. I hated facing down my own Phyrexian Obliterator or my Wormcoil Engine. (The Wormcoil Engine was the worst, because he got it with Karn's restart the game ability... URGH.)
I mean, seriously... my deck had said Wormcoil and said Obliterator, as well as Kuldotha Phoenix and Chimeric Mass (and a few other goodies, like Caged Sun and Skinrender). But I guess that's luck for ya...

Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread yet?
Beginning to dislike multiplayer games with my friends...
See, I can understand if they target me if I get a galvanizer out, or if I try to get one out, or if they see me building up a lot of lifegain etc.
But when I literally have just got 1 Iron Myr and 5 mana and have spent the last several turns just scrying my deck, and am assaulted by two Riverfall Mimics for 8 damage, followed by a giant for another 9, and a Lightning Bolt to that Iron Myr for a Slag Fiend to be a 1/1...I get the feeling I'm being unjustly targeted.
Everyone says that they target me because my deck is based on rapid loops, so I modify it to be more useful without them and give me reasons to do things other than make that loop...and I still get dicked on. I legitimately had just that Iron Myr whilst the guy next to me had a 2/2 deathtouch as their weakest creature...

Flargh.
Opened nothing good, and proceeded to lose every game at the pre-release today.

Man, went 3-3 today. Cards that made it were Geth, Lord of the Vault and Chancellor of the Spires. Those Blighted Agents kicked ass as well. I would have gotten 4-2 and possibly won some packs if it weren't for my deck hating me and drawing poorly during two of those rounds.
@Lyinginbedmon: The exact same thing happens to me. It's just the nature of Magic. If people perceive you as the threat, they will target you, even though you aren't actually a threat on the field. They see Myrs and they relate it to beatdown, so they want you out as soon as possible. The moment I break out my own Myr deck, the same thing happens, although it's not nearly as threatening because I'm running standard instead of legacy. Have you built other decks so you can draw the aggro off of your Myrs for a while?

Apparently 2 different people drew Karn at the draft yesterday, naturally neither one is staying off of eBay

One guy pulled a Karn from an intro pack yesterday.
I saw TONS of swords in play, one guy drew a Jin-Gitaxias and a foil Chancellor of the Annex in the same pack.

Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread yet?
Think I've pretty much nailed down the two sideboards for my Ninja and Myr decks.
Myr Engine:
There's also an extra dash of tutoring and replacement Dispels for the Turn Asides in case the opponent is using nonspecific effects rather than targeted ones.
The Forge of course adds a degree of survivability to the deck if necessary, fetched by Mystic Speculation or Fabricate, paid for in large by the mana ramping the Myr are capable of (Coretapper turn 2, tap-sac a kicked Chalice for 4 mana and tap it to play a Palladium Myr turn 3, turn 4 there's 10 mana to use).
Suddenly, Ninjas
Veil of Secrecy forcibly gives me an unblocked attacker in emergencies, and Stir the Grave lets me retrieve an important creature such as Ink Eyes if she gets ditched.
The remainder of the sideboard is, perhaps, a classic ninja trick: By switching out the Endrek Sahrs, Higures, and Ink Eyes for Time Sieves, Thopter Foundrys, and Swords of the Meek, the deck is turned very largely on its head into a weenie artifact rush deck. In 3-match play, this means the opponent will very likely have prepared against a very different deck.
Myr Engine:
- Alloy Myr x2
- Darksteel Forge x1
- Dispel x4
- Fabricate x1
- Mishra, Artificer Prodigy x1
- Myr Reservoir x2
- Mystic Speculation x1
- Semblance Anvil x2
- Another Alloy Myr, Mishra, or Forge, not sure, possibly even Karn

Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread yet?
I was killing it with Norn's Annex yesterday, some of the phyrexian mana cards I had were pretty awesome. A few planeswalkers were about, but I never faced any thanks to some of the deck attack cards I had. Went 1-4 for the day, but every game I played was 2-1.
One guy actually pulled a Sheoldred, Whispering One from one of his boosters. It was wrecking people left right and center.

A guy pulled a Sheoldred at mine too.
Absolutely slaughtered me.
The winner was a black/green non-infect deck.
The hell is that?

Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread yet?
Because I don't plan to be going to tournaments any time soon and my friends don't mind me playing older cards, I ordered the 10th edition elves deck and made this elf/wurm deck.
It's very fun to play with, and puts me on a par with a guy who was always trashing my old deck. First game I played against him had 2 Plated Slagwurms on by turn 5, which is rather good for the level we play at (i.e. we're all pretty crap).
Wondering if there's any obvious improvements to be made on it. The internet has already told me to get rid of the wurms and go straight-up elf, but that will be pretty expensive, and I just love the wurm's card art too much to drop them from the deck. So any way to make it work a bit better even with the wurms?
Edit: Also, I've noticed the Khalni Heart Expeditions rarely get used. Should I stick with them or put in some elvish champions or something?

I think this place is full of spies. I think they're onto me.
Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread yet?
My take on it is that the deck isn't sure if it wants to swing with a ton of little elves or one big wurm. Since you say you want to keep the wurms, I think you would want your elves focused on mana production rather than attacking. If you don't play against a lot of land destruction, you could combo Arbor Elf with things like Wild Growth and Fertile Ground to get lots of mana out of a single land.

Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread yet?
Yeah, I'll have a go at that.
So something like:
- Immaculate Magistrate
- Elvish Promenade
- Imperious Perfect
- Lys Alana Huntmaster
- 3 Elvish Warrior
+ 3 Vernal Bloom
+ 2 Viridian Emissary
+ 2 Sylvan ranger
That way I'll get mana ramp that puts forests on the field instead of straight-up Llanowar-style 'tap for mana', which thins out my deck to up chances of a wurm draw and helps Vernal Bloom.
Also, is swapping out the Khalni Hearts for 3 more Arbor Elves a good idea?

Rebuilding my blue deck I'm noticing a lot of NP control cards are old faithfuls like Unsummon or Negate, but with added 'that player loses 1 life' for good measure.
I would swap Khalni Hearts for Arbor Elves, I think being able to constantly reuse forests is better than just a one time bump of 2.

Ok, for now, I've finished tinkering with my discard deck. Here's the updated deck: http://www.mtgdeckbuilder.net/Decks/ViewDeck/78037
Worked well when I was playing with it last night, when I lost it was from lack of proper cards in my draw (and he was playing a blue control deck). But I was able to win off one swamp and a dark ritual that got me a hypnotic specter out and he just hit over and over.

Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread yet?
I like the discard. Killing with discard is funny, certainly seems to work, although I can't really say much without playtesting... My buddy plays with a discard deck that is all enchantments, instants, and sorceries. I'll get you the decklist as soon as I can.
Here is a little stab at Infect-Control I've been working on. I would love to do things like add Sword of Body and Mind and Sword of Feast and Famine in place of my Strata Scythes, but I don't really have the money and I boarded the Scythes out anyways. It's done well for me, considering I can infect the hell out of someone pretty quickly and cut down whatever is in my way, but I lack the field clearance to deal with multiple small threats. If I had some Black Sun's Zenith, that would be a different story, but alas, I do not.
