Master's Edition 4 MTGO Draft

Postby Graham » 22 May 2011, 00:14

Jer and I thought we'd try our hand at an MTGO drafting video.
Come watch us flail our way through a very odd drafting format.

You want more? Let us know!
Maybe next time we'll do an actual current format :D

Currently watching this. It's interesting, despite me not actually playing Magic seriously. Also, it makes me want to play Magic Online, which I'm sure is a bad and expensive idea.

Would watch more. :D

I may look into playing MTGO, might help to get some experience with magic that isn't Duels of the Planeswalkers before I head off to uni.

How does MTGO work anyway?

Also, quite fun would watch more.

Okay, please don't take this the wrong way. But do not make this a regular thing. The video is epic and pure awesome, but I already sink enough money into 40k, Computer games, Books, D&D and food, without you guys dangling the cake of Magic in my face.

Yes I realise I could not watch the video, but that defeats the purpose of the video
Do you guys mind. I'm trying to write an essay

Its probably not a good thing I feel the need to put a disclaimer after everything I say

This is a thing my and my friend run.

Very interesting video. Definitely want more. Then again I want any Magic videos you care to throw at us, but this was interesting to see the older format.
It's turtles all the way down.

Question: What program were you using that phailed and what program are you using that works to do the vidcasting? Jillers has Camtasia, and of the 16 hours+ of footage and audio over two different Saturdays, we've only gotten two good sessions recorded.

Does all software like this have a steep learning curve?

I enjoyed this and wouldn't mind seeing more, though other draft formats would be interesting.

Did you ever figure out if you can set up private drafts? A LRR fan and/or LRR crew and fans draft could be fun.

I'd love to see more of this. I found it really interesting and quite entertaining. It's great to learn more about old sets as well as I'm relatively new to magic.

Please make more, and if possible get a whole draft recorded, though I realise that'd take up a lot of space.

So, I watched the whole draft, and enjoyed your thought process, but when it came game time, MtGO's sounds were really drowning you out and I just couldn't watch. Might want to turn that down next time (or do that in editing, if you recorded your commentary separate from the game footage).

It would be great if you could do some more draft videos, especially some more up to date formats.
Two things I would say though, are
1- Jer try to be less tense; I really do understand it's hard to concentrate and commentate at the same time, but do make sure you think through your plays as you seemed to be doing fine time wise. I face-palmed hard at the first turn F6 ^^
and 2- if you have enough disk space to record a whole draft and get through several games you might want to split them into separate videos since they can take quite a while, and manageable chunks are nice.

Neither of those things are very important though, because the power of LRR + MTGO is more than enough to keep me coming back.

If you had kept watching another minute, Graham actually did turn down those sounds and made it watchable :)

But yeah, those sounds were actually painful...

Thoroughly enjoyed watching that. My only real qualm is the fact that 90% of the time I couldn't actually see what was on the cards and so didn't really know what was actually happening from time to time. I know that because these videos are so long, increasing the quality would drastically reduce the amount of time you could record for, but as someone who's never been able to get into it properly because of the inherent cost, I've no idea what most of the cards are and just flipping past most of them was kinda frustrating for me, especially during the duel when I had no idea what the other guy's cards were or what they were really doing.

Other than that, though, was good fun and I'm looking forward to the next one!

@Myrph Yeah, I agree with that too. I managed to read most of the cards they zoomed in on by pausing the video, but yeah, I didn't know anything about this set so some of the cards that they didn't zoom on and still played or the cards the opponent played weren't clear.

You could probably fix this by having one of you commenting on the cards more without actually putting much input into playing, like Graham said he would.

I would definitely watch more videos like this, it was fun and made me want to go back to play, which I'll probably do once I'm out of debt... Magic is a harsh and very expensive mistress.

Yeah, I turned down the in-game sounds fairly soon after starting.

Also, next time we'll try to: record an HD version, linger on the zoomed in cards for longer, and comment more clearly and frequently on what the cards do. Hopefully that'll help with clarity.

Thanks for the feedback!

Oops... Yeah, I turned it off really quickly.

That said, WotC certainly noticed, and just let everyone on Twitter know about this video. Way to go, man.

You should definitely do more of these. It was cool seeing the old cards, but it'd be even cooler if you did some of the newer ones, if only so I know what you're talking about. =P

That and because it'd be very helpful to see people who are probably way better at the game than I am talking strategies.

That was a lot of fun. Personally, I think that doing an old set like ME4 made it even better; I'm sure we've all been doing lots of building with the Scars block lately, and that would just be more of the same. The pace seemed fine, as well. With Gatherer open in another tab, I don't think I missed anything significant. . . but an HD version would be nice, for sure, to see the cards that you passed over.

Approve.

If you do any more then it's probably wise not to make them any longer than this without breaking them in to smaller sections.
